About this event

In July, we're reading The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood & Renee Nault. In this graphic novel adaptation of the classic dystopian novel, the Republic of Gilead is a repressive land ruled by extreme religion and patriarchal supremacy. Offred, once a woman with a family, a job, and a life, is now a handmaid, a woman with viable ovaries owed by a member of government forced to conceive his children. Offred has to find a way to survive this new life while dealing with the memories of the husband, child, and former identity she once had.

If you're feeling ambitious, we can stick to a banned books theme and also talk about the absolutely gorgeous The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen. A boy and his immigrant mother use faerie tales to connect with one another across language barriers as the boy tries to share truths about himself he doesn't have the words for.

Registration closes at noon on Monday, July 11.
