Event description
Nurture the tiny mad scientist in your home with Vizcaya’s Virtual Food Lab – a series of five (5) video programs you can enjoy from at home

About this Event

Over the next 5 weeks, get your kids excited about veggies through hands-on activities and interactive discussions that teach them about the food that grows all around them.

Lessons will be delivered as YouTube videos, both LIVE and pre-recorded, and sent right to your inbox each week.

RECOMMENDED AGES: This program is best for children ages 6-12 and is designed for parents and children to learn together.

July 19 – Is this food? [PRE-RECORDED]

Your curious kiddo may have tried to eat things that are not exactly food. In this lesson, we’ll explore parts of the plant your children may not have thought to eat to get them excited about veggies.

Do you eat flowers? Do you eat seeds?

Learn about the different edible parts of plants, and have fun with kids making (and eating) your own plant creation from those parts!

This lesson will be released on July 19 and you can watch it with your child anytime throughout the week. Leave any questions or comments in the comments section of the YouTube video and we’ll address them LIVE during next week’s lesson.

Activity: explore different parts of plants (roots, stems, flowers) and build your own Frankenstein-style plant from the edible pieces!

July 26 - What's on Deering's plate? [LIVE DISCUSSION]

Get any questions answered from the July 19 session before we dig into the history of agriculture at Vizcaya.

Dive into Mr. Deering's plate! What did he eat 100 years ago? Join a Vizcaya educator to learn what was being planted, prepared and enjoyed by Mr. Deering, his guests and staff!

In this live exploration of the Village through historic pictures and files, we will learn what the farm was growing. Participants will discuss how Vizcaya and Miami have changed in the last past 100 years.

Activity: Explore your own fridge to see what kinds of foods you eat! Are they the same or different to 100 years ago? Why might that be?

August 2 – Kitchen Lab! [PRE-RECORDED]

Roll up your sleeves and put on your chef hat for this hands-on lesson coming to your very own kitchen. Learn simple recipes with fresh herbs that typically can be grown in South Florida.

This lesson will be released on August 2 and you can watch it with your child anytime throughout the week. Leave any questions or comments in the comments section of the YouTube video and we’ll address them LIVE during next week’s lesson.

Activity: Prepare infused water (like in the photo above), herbal dipping oil and pesto sauce.

August 9 – Starting a Home Garden [LIVE DISCUSSION]

October is Miami’s planting season, so this is prime time to explore how to start your own garden! Join us LIVE from Vizcaya's Kitchen Garden and learn how to plant herbs from cuttings and how to sow seeds.

We will demonstrate proper technique to take cuttings and plant seeds, and how to take care of your edible garden.

Activity: Live online session and demonstration with one of Vizcaya's educators

August 16 – It’s alive! ALIVE!!!! [PRE-RECORDED]

Did you know you can grow new veggies from food scraps? Give new life to your leftovers with this lesson.

After cooking, you can save things like carrots, radishes, lettuce hearts and supplement the home garden we started last week.

Activity: Watch as we take veggie leftovers and scraps and plant them to grow new ones. Then follow along in your own garden.

Got questions after this lesson? Leave them in the comments of the YouTube video and our Vizcaya team will be there to answer them.
