Event description
Join us for a virtual Campfire where we will explore Burn's Ditch in northwest Indiana.

About this event

Burns Ditch, in Porter County, is a human-made waterway in the northwest corner of the state. It was created in the 1920's to rechannel the Calumet River to Lake Michigan, subsequently draining swamplands and improving transportation. Shortly after its creation, Burns Ditch was targeted for industrialization and steel mills were built on its shores. Today you can still see the sharp contrast between the natural Indiana Dunes National Park and industrial Port of Indiana while exploring the area.

Join us for a one-of-a-kind Campfires experience on Sunday, November 7. Through a mix of 360-degree videos and Zoom, we’ll “trek” along Burns Waterway. Along the way, we’ll read short texts and have conversations about the ways we shape our environment and the impacts of these human actions.

SCHOLAR-FACILITATOR: TBD

Details

To participate, you’ll need an internet connection and an openness to exploration via a virtual platform! We’ll send you the Zoom link, the 360-degree videos and the readings ahead of time; when it’s time to start, you just open the Zoom link and we’ll guide you from there.

Spots are limited and pre-registration is required. Recommended for ages 12 and up. For optimal experience, we recommend attending via laptop or desktop computer. We also recommend no more than two participants per Zoom connection.

ABOUT CAMPFIRES

Campfires pairs nature and literature to spark conversations about Indiana’s future. This year’s series is made possible by generous funding from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust; we are proud to be a part of a consortium of Central Indiana organizations helping Hoosiers to access and appreciate the White River. www.IndianaHumanities.org/Campfires
