About this Event

Join us July 20-24, 2020 for this VIRTUAL engineering summer camp for high school students, hosted by the University of Kentucky College of Engineering and Newton's Attic.

Have you dabbled in game development before, but want to dive deeper? In this class we will explore the C# coding libraries used in Unity, take advantage of the more advanced features of Unity, and even learn a little about how the physics engine and game engine work. By the end of the week you’ll be well equipped to make amazing games of your very own.

Class Requirements:

  • Have taken the Intro to Game Development class OR have prior experience with Unity. (Haven't taken the Intro to Game Development class, or have no experience with Unity? You're in luck! Add-on the original Intro to Game Development class online modules and work through it at your own pace before this camp for just $95 (valued at $175). To do this, just select the Add-On option during registration.)
  • A computer capable of running the Unity Game Engine (can be Mac or Windows). See HERE for more details.

Minimum recommended hardware:

  • RAM: 8GB
  • Hard Drive: 40GB+ of free space
  • CPU: Intel i7 (or equivalent) or better
  • Graphics: ~1.5GB or better of VRAM

Note: lesser hardware can work but can result in very slow performance from the game engine)

This VIRTUAL summer experience will run from July 20-24, 2020. The program will take place online, via Zoom, from 9:00 AM EST to 12:30 PM EST Monday, July 20- Friday, July 24. Students must have access to a computer with the recommended hardware and requirements listed above as well as internet access (and, video capability preferred).

DETAILS ABOUT THE "INTRO TO GAME DEVELOPMENT" ADD-ON

The add-on cost is an additional $95 to the Advanced Game Development class. This class will help give you a taste of the techniques and tools used to create games both big and small. We will use a combination of C# programming and the Unity game engine to learn the basics of game development. Over the course of the week, we will delve into the basics of programming in C#, how to navigate the Unity interface, and how to integrate coding with the features of Unity to create games of your very own.

Due to the add-on nature of this class, Intro to Game Development modules should be completed prior to the Advanced Game Development class and are conducted asynchronously on your own time, at your own pace (pre-recorded videos).

Class Requirements:

  • A computer capable of running the Unity Game Engine (can be Mac or Windows). See here for more details.
  • Unity Hub and engine installed (follow the instructions
  • here.)
  • Visual Studio Code installed (Follow the guides
  • here.)
  • A mouse that is compatible with your computer (not 100% required but HIGHLY recommended)
  • NOTE: No prior coding experience is required but a basic understanding of navigating computers and computer programs is helpful

Minimum recommended hardware same as recommended for Advanced Game Development program.
