VirginiaCAN Presents Fall 2019 Regional Training Events:

Five Free College Access Workshops in Five Days!

Day Three: Germanna Community College (Wednesday, 9/25)

VirginiaCAN and our partner organizations share a common goal: to enhance access to post-secondary education for residents of Virginia. VirginiaCAN is pleased to collaborate with ECMC to sponsor a series of free college access curriculum workshops, “Realizing the College Dream.” This workshop will provide attendees tools to help high school students reach their higher education goals.

Workshop includes:

  • Highly interactive training environment
  • Experiential, game-based techniques for teaching fundamentals
  • Facilitation by professional trainers
  • Lunch provided by ECMC

You will learn:

  • How to challenge your high school students to see themselves in college
  • Simple ways to explain financial aid to your students
  • How to incorporate our curricula into existing programs

Who should attend:

  • Those who work with high school students, including:
  • Teachers and counselors
  • College access professionals
  • Community-based organization staff

Attendees must:

  • Download a free copy of the curriculum in magazine format or PDF format to a tablet or other smart device. During our workshop we will refer to the online curriculum and will provide handouts for select activities.

About ECMC’s “Realizing the College Dream” - A curriculum guide that supports teachers, counselors and community-based organization staff in their work to increase the college-going expectations of low-income, first-generation students and their families. The lessons provide students with an opportunity to think of themselves as future college students and to debunk the myth that they cannot afford college.

The guide was written in collaboration with UC Berkeley’s Center for Educational Partnerships. It is nationally recognized and endorsed by the Pell Institute and the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP). It is appropriate for middle school, high school and community college students, as well as parents and family members. It can be used in a variety of settings including classrooms, after-school programs, Saturday programs, and community based programs.
