Event description

Description

Virginia Working Landscapes (VWL) is a program of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) that promotes the conservation of native biodiversity and sustainable land use through research, education and community engagement.

The VWL Annual Meeting is a free and public event where attendees will connect with VWL staff, collaborative partners, and one another as we review VWL's accomplishments from 2018. Several presentations and a poster session will collectively summarize our program's activities and partnerships while highlighting the importance of information-sharing for moving conservation forward.

Tentative Schedule:

  • Opening Presentation by VWL Program Director, Dr. Amy Johnson

  • An Update on Pollen Research by Blandy Farm Director and Research Professor, Dr. Dave Carr

  • Innovative Land Management at Over Jordan Farm by Bean Hollow Grassfed owner, Dr. Mike Sands

  • A Poster Session and Social Hour

Poster Session:

  • Drones for good: Using small unmanned aircraft systems to detect nests of ground breeding birds
  • Influence of grassland type on arthropod biomass and diversity
  • How busy can a bee be? Exploring whether native or exotic flora influence bumble bee foraging efficiency and colony success
  • Restoring and reconnecting brook trout habitat in the Piedmont of Virginia
  • Tree growth and mortality in a temperate deciduous forest in an era of global change
  • Mole salamander embryos develop faster in open fields than in forests

This is a free event, however, registration is required.
