This registration page allows you to buy various ticket types.

1.) Tickets for the Friday Workshop only – go to: https://libraryofvaafamgenealogy.eventbrite.com. This ticket includes admittance to our Friday, September 15th African American Genealogy Workshop only. This registration link does not include a ticket to our Saturday, September 15 African American Genealogy Conference.

2.) A Combination Ticket - This ticket includes admittance to our Friday, September 15th African American Genealogy Workshop AND a ticket for Saturday, September 16th African American Genealogy Conference. These tickets sales will close on September 11, 2017.

3.) Tickets for the Saturday Conference only - This ticket includes admittance for Saturday's Conference only. This does not include a ticket to our Friday, September 15th African American Genealogy Workshop.

4.) Saturday Boxed Lunch - This ticket includes a boxed lunch for Saturday's Conference from the Library of Virginia's Discovery Cafe. Boxed lunch orders will be closed by September 8th, 2017.

AFRICAN AMERICAN GENEALOGY WORKSHOP

African American Research at the Library of Virginia: Genealogy to 1870

Place: Conference Rooms

Cost: $25 ($20 for Semper Virginia Society members). Or $50 as a package with our Sep. 16 conference “Virginia: Where African American Genealogy and History Begin.”

Explore the methods and resources for African American genealogy prior to the end of the Civil War. Attendees will learn ways to determine whether an individual was enslaved or free and what types of records will be useful for further research. The workshop will focus on the Library of Virginia's collections including cohabitation registers; free Negro registers; and lists, wills, deeds, and tax records as well as selected federal records that can be accessed through its databases. Virginia: Where African American Genealogy and History Begin

This Virginia-focused African American genealogy conference is sponsored by the Library, the Virginia chapters of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc., the Middle Peninsula African American Genealogical and Historical Society, and the Richmond-area congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with support by FamilySearch. Learn about genealogical records, research techniques, and the latest digital initiatives in African American family history from regional experts and Library of Virginia staff members. Keynote speaker Phillip Troutman (assistant professor of writing and history at The George Washington University) will discuss “The Domestic Slave Trade and its Effect on African American Family History.”

Box lunches available for preorder when registering. Spaces are limited and registration is on a first come, first served basis.

An optional Friday-evening reception and panel discussion (“Preserving African American Stories: Collaborations, Crowdsourcing, and How You Can Help”) is free and open to the public.
