Event description

Spend the Night with the Corps

This is the best way to see if the Corps is right for you!

What exactly is the Spend the Night Program?

The Spend the Night program is an overnight program that gives you the opportunity to shadow a cadet and participate in the Corps' daily routine. You and your family will eat lunch with a cadet and attend a Corps and ROTC information session together. Then, families depart for the evening, and you connect with your cadet host shadowing him or her through the typical routine. We try to match your host based on your Military-/Citizen Leader-Track interest.

Interested? Click to Register and Select a Date!

What does it cost to attend?

The program is free, but you do need to bring money for your meals while you are on-campus.

Where do I stay overnight?

You will stay in either Pearson Hall or New Cadet Hall with your assigned cadet. Don't forget to bring your sleeping bag!

Attending family members will need to make their own lodging arrangements.

Is there a minimum age to attend the Spend the Night program?

You must be at least a high school junior to attend our overnight program.

If you are a freshman or a sophomore, we would love to have you attend one of our information sessions on campus. It is never too early to start researching college and ROTC options!

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

You must provide your own transportation to and from campus.

Once you get to campus, please make sure to get a parking pass. You can obtain one from the Visitor and Undergraduate Admissions Center.

For more detailed information about parking on campus, visit Parking Services.

What would a typical schedule look like?

You arrive on Day 1 for check-in at 11am. You and your family will check-in and you will take your gear to your host's room. You and your family will have an opportunity to attend a Corps information session, a cadet panel, and a session ROTC/Citizen-Leader Track of your choice. Then, your family will be free to depart. You will connect with your host and shadow him or her for the rest of the day. We try to match your host based on your Military-/Citizen-Leader Track interest.

On Day 2, you will attend our Citizen-Leader Track physical fitness training at 5:30am, return to shower and dress, attend morning formation, breakfast with your host, and check out no later than 8:30am.

Do I have to participate in the physical fitness training?

You do not have to participate in the physical fitness training the morning of Day 2, but you are required to attend. The physical fitness training is voluntary, but highly motivational!

What should I bring?

What to pack is important because weather in Blacksburg can be a little unpredictable!

Here is the ten-day forecast.

Here's a list you can print out of what to bring.

What to Bring

Approximately $35 cash for lunch, dinner, and breakfast

Workout clothes (Warm weather: T-shirt, shorts, calf length athletic socks without logos, and comfortable running shoes. Colder weather: Sweatpants.)

Change of clothes for Day 2 (preferably a collared shirt, jeans or khakis (pants or skirt), a belt, and comfortable shoes.)

A Sleeping bag and pillow

A Towel

Daily grooming items/toiletries – don’t forget to bring shower shoes!

✓ A Phone and charger

School work for study hours

In addition, you may want to bring a robe and a water bottle to take water to physical fitness training.

The Spend the Night Program is great for learning about the Corps and ROTC programs, but what else can I do to learn more about Virginia Tech when I visit?

After completing the Spend the Night program you may also want to participate in the information sessions offered by Virginia Tech Admissions, your college's information session for your desired major, and a campus tour (you must sign up separately for these Day 2 activities). You can also individually arrange with your cadet or their roommate to attend an academic class on campus after check-out at 8:30am.

I am interested in more than one ROTC program right now. Who should I contact to find out more about the ROTC programs I was unable to attend during the Spend the Night Program?

The Spend the Night Program includes presentations by each ROTC program, but you must choose one to attend. You and your family can "divide and conquer" and each attend a different session. If you have specific questions about the other ROTC programs, we recommend contacting them directly:

Donna Mallet, Scholarship and Enrollment Officer | 540-231-4804

Lt Col Cox, Recruiting | 540-231-6404

DSN: 931-1110 ext 231-6404

LT Fearon, Recruiting | 540-231-7883

Do I have to bring my printed registration to the event?

We prefer you do. But, no, we can access your registration online to check you in.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes. Log back in and you can update your registration information, cancel or change your session, etc.

What happens if the session I want to attend is full?

Up to 10 students can be placed on the waitlist, and if you choose to be placed on the waitlist, you will receive an email to register if a spot opens up.

What can I do if the type of host I would like (i.e., Marine Option) are all already assigned?

You can choose a different date and see if any hosts of the type you want are available for that date. Or, you can check back in periodically to see if any become available.

Can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Please do!

Contact LTC Mariger at or call 540-231-6858.
