A Framework for Designing Meditation Based Music Therapy
Interventions: This course will provide applicable definitions of
meditation, state the potential uses and benefits of meditation-based
music therapy interventions, and provide tools clinicians can use to
design their own. This course will also provide references that can be
used to improve future treatment planning. During the course,
participants will have the opportunity to engage in sample
interventions.

Bridging the Rainbow: LGBTQIA Cultural Competency in Music Therapy:
This course will provide an introduction to current issues facing the
LGBTQIA community, as well as historical context for the role of the
medical/therapeutic community in queer people’s lives. Attendees will
discuss how to validate and support client’s gender expression, gender
identity, and sexual orientation, and learn appropriate terminology.
The relationship between music and the LGBTQIA community and its
application to a music therapy setting will also be discussed.

Taking Action: A Panel Discussion on Current State Issues and
Licensure: This panel presentation and discussion will explore
the current and evident need for the profession of music therapy to
become a protected title through a state license or registry. Topics
of exploration in the presentation include: defining and clarifying
the roles of the Virginia Music Therapy Association (VMTA) & the
Virginia State Task Force (VASTF), solidifying Shenandoah University
and Radford University’s commitment to advocacy in the state,
providing case example and recommendation for the need of title
protection/licensure in the state, and providing action steps to
increase advocacy for title protection/licensure in Virginia. Diverse
perspectives will be offered to promote an open and honest dialogue
about this topic as well to raise awareness that there are supports
and action steps to help navigate advocacy opportunities in each music
therapists’ individual communities.
