What is the difference between VCU’s universitywide ceremony and departmental ceremonies?
Graduates have the opportunity to celebrate their achievement at two ceremonies: the universitywide ceremony and their school or department’s ceremony. At departmental ceremonies, graduates will be recognized individually and typically will walk across the stage. You will receive information concerning your individual ceremony from your school or department office. Click here for a complete listing of departmental ceremonies.
Departmental ceremonies are separate from the universitywide ceremony, held on Saturday, May 13 at 10 a.m. at the Richmond Coliseum, located at 601 E. Leigh St. At the universitywide ceremony, graduates are recognized collectively by school, with the exception of Ph.D. and Ed.D. candidates, who will be recognized individually.
What time should I arrive at the Richmond Coliseum?
Graduates, please plan to arrive by 9 a.m. and use the 5th Street entrance of Richmond Coliseum.
What time will family and friends be able to enter the Richmond Coliseum?
Family and friends, please note that the 6th Street entrance of the Richmond Coliseum will open to the public at 9 a.m.
What are my parking options?
Public parking is available on both 5th and 7th streets for a nominal fee. The closest deck for graduates is at 5th and Marshall streets.
Where do I go once I arrive at the Richmond Coliseum?
Graduates will enter the Coliseum through the doors on 5th Street. Follow the signs located throughout the concourse. Line-up areas are organized by school and then degree. Commencement staff will also be on hand to help you.
What if I am a double major?
For the universitywide ceremony, graduates who are double majors will need to pick one school to walk with in the processional. However, these graduates are able to be recognized by standing for each degree when their schools are announced.
Any prohibited items at the Richmond Coliseum?
The Coliseum strictly prohibits alcohol, backpacks and duffle bags, balloons, coolers, bottles, cans, outside food and drink, laser pointers, fireworks, artificial noise makers or air horns, weapons, chains or tools, wrapped packages, and banners and signs. Be advised that the police will confiscate these items. In addition, graduates are asked not to bring their purses or other valuable items, beach balls, Silly String or flammables of any form.
