Event description
Virginia Beach 4-H Junior Camp is a residential camping program for children ages 9-13.

About this Event

Virginia Beach 4-H Junior Camp is a residential, week-long summer camp program for children ages 9-13*. Camp is held at the Airfield 4-H Educational Center located on 285 acres of property 70 miles west of Virginia Beach off Route 460 in Wakefield, VA.

4-H Camp provides youth countless opportunities for learning more about themselves, their peers, and the natural world around them. Campers participate in morning camp classes and have various activities scheduled for the entire afternoon. Campers register for three classes for the entire week. Some examples of the 20+ camp classes offered include leather crafts, swimming, canoeing, fun with duct tape, fun with foods, animal science, performing arts, archery, riflery, and many more. Programs may include team challenges, flag ceremonies, swim Olympics, talent show, and dance. Nightly campfires are often the highlight of the camp week. 4-H Camp is designed to meet the needs and interests of the 4-H camper. Our main focus during camp is to help youth develop independence, self-esteem, confidence, interpersonal skills, and other life skills.

Lodging & Supervision:

Campers stay in climate-controlled lodges with a private bathroom in each room. Campers are grouped with no more than eight to a room. Well trained counselors and counselors-in-training (CITs) help provide supervision at all times. Professional 4-H Extension staff, adult volunteers, and camp summer staff provide instruction for all camp classes. There is a registered nurse or EMT on staff at the 4-H Center at all times. Certified lifeguards provide swimming classes and free swims. Safety of the campers is always primary for the staff.

Cost & Payment:

The cost to attend camp is $360.00 per camper. The cost includes round trip bus transportation from the Virginia Beach Cooperative Extension Office, camper t-shirt, meals, lodging, special activities, classes, and programs.

The $360.00 fee is due at the time of registration. However, we cannot accept online payment for camp fees. Thus, once you register online you will need to bring in or mail the $360.00 payment to our office at: Virginia Beach Cooperative Extension Office, Attn 4-H Camp, 2449 Princess Anne Rd. Bldg. 14, 2nd Floor, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.

Payments must be received within 2 weeks of your registration date or your spot in camp will be released to the wait list. If you have a financial need, please contact or call 757-385-4769 for a scholarship application.

There will be a $50.00 fee for all returned checks.

Cancellations made prior to June 1, 2020 will result in a refund of payment made minus a processing fee of $50.00. Cancellations made after June 2, 2020 will result in a non-refund.

All cancellations request must be made in writing. Please allow 8 weeks to process refund.

*Age requirements:

  • A camper is any youth that is 9-13 years old
  • Virginia Beach Teen Camp Counselors/CITs must be at least 14 by January 1, 2020
  • A child that will turn nine before September 30, 2020 can attend camp as a camper (Thus, some 8 year olds can attend camp, as long as they will turn nine before September 30, 2020)
  • Youth that turn 13 after January 1, 2020 must attend camp as a camper.
  • Youth that turn 14 on or before January 1, 2020 cannot attend camp as a camper – they must have applied in advance for a Teen Counselor position and applications usually come out each fall around the start of the school year.

No Roommate Requests:

We are no longer taking roommate requests. This is being done for a number of reasons. Inevitably, each year we are unable to accommodate everyone’s request which leads to disparity and disappointment. Often requests come in that are conflicting and make for awkward situations. When requests can be accommodated it sometimes creates situations where all but one or two of the campers knows each other well and those one or two kids end up feeling left out and alienated despite staff’s best efforts to integrate the room. Summer camp is a place for kids to get out of their comfort zone and interact with new people in a fun low pressure environment. Summer camp is a place for new experiences. Campers may miss out on meeting a new lifelong friend that they would not otherwise have made had it not been for them meeting them for the first time at camp in their cabin. Please allow your kids to get the full experience of camp and all the glorious benefits that come will it that will follow them for a lifetime.

Tax Credits for Child Care During 4-H Camp

1. Each year the State 4-H Office receives questions from parents/guardians who want VCE’s federal tax identification number so that they can claim a child-care tax credit for the time that their child/children attended 4-H camp. (The logic seems to be that “any child care provided so that parents can work can be claimed.”) However, IRS Publication 503 clearly indicates that overnight camp is not considered child care. Specifically, IRS Publication 503 states that “The cost of sending your child to an overnight camp is not considered a work-related expense.”)

2. Any parents/guardians who contact your office with this request should be informed that overnight 4-H camp does not qualify as a tax credit.

3. 4-H Day Camp is deductible if a parent’s or guardian’s child/children stays with him/her eight(8) hours a night.

COVID-19 Refund Policy Statement

We realize there is concern and uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 issue and how it may impact our summer camp program. Our policy will be to follow all recommended guidelines from the state, and in the event that camp were cancelled due to increased health and safety concerns, all families would receive a FULL refund of their payments.

We also acknowledge that some families may decide to cancel, even if camp itself is still held as planned and in that case we will still follow the policy that is already laid out for cancellation.
