Virgil Cantini (1919 - 2009) was a prolific and innovative Pittsburgh-based artist who worked in enamel, metal, glass, wood, fiber and more to create numerous large-scale murals and sculptures in the public realm as well as hundreds of pieces out of his studio in the Oakland neighborhood. Cantini was instrumental in establishing the Department of Studio Arts at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served on the faculty for nearly 40 years, and many of his pieces can be found throughout campus.

Design Nation explores historic art, craftsmanship & design of the 20th-century through interactions with our built environment. Curating programming and resources, we celebrate cultural heritage, its perpetuation and influence.
With an office in Pittsburgh, Design Nation is a roving project, launched in New York in 2015. Check out past programming and events. Creative Director, Brittany Reilly
