Event Details

About the Workshop:

At the VOICE Center, we believe that everyone plays a vital role in helping to transform attitudes and actions regarding sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking.  We are inviting our community members to spend a day with us to learn how you can help prevent violence, support survivors, and create a safer community. Creating a Community of Respect: A Violence Prevention Workshop is being offered on Sunday, February 11th to anyone who is interested in learning more about the issues impacting our campus and how they can get involved to help create change. The workshop is FREE and open to all MSU staff members and students (both current and incoming).

Interested in Volunteering?

Becoming a VOICE Center volunteer provides students with an opportunity to become involved with positive change on campus while learning valuable peer advocacy and education skills.  In addition, students may be able to receive paraprofessional or internship credits from some departments. Successful completion of the Creating a Community of Respect: Violence Prevention Workshop is a prerequisite for volunteering with the VOICE Center in any capacity.

VOICE Center Outreach Volunteers

Anyone who has completed the Violence Prevention Workshop is eligible to join our outreach team, which promotes, staffs, and helps with the VOICE Center's awareness events and information sessions. Examples of Outreach Volunteer responsibilites include: volunteering with Take Back the Night, staffing information tables at orientation fairs, and helping with the Take the Pledge campaign. Time committment is completely up to the student.

VOICE Center Volunteer Advocates

The VOICE Center hosts an advocate training every Fall. Peer Advocates receive training to be able to provide support, information, and resources to survivors and their loved ones. Services that Peer Advocates provide include: answering the 24-Hour Confidential Support Line; meeting with survivors one-on-one; accompanying survivors to help with reporting, accessing medical, legal, and/or other services; and talking with friends and family members of survivors about how to best support their loved one.  Advocates are required to staff a weekly 2-hour shift in the office and attend 2 advocate meetings per month. The application process consists of a written application, reference checks, and an interview prior to selection into the advocate training program. Applications are available in the VOICE Center office, or you can email and we would be happy to send you an application.

VOICE Center Volunteer Educators

The VOICE Center's Peer Educator Program is intended to create a team of educators to co-facilitate educational presentations to student peers, student organizations, and Bobcat athletic teams. Peer educators will be required to attend 2 educator meetings per month to receive updates and continued education. Peer Educators will shadow several presentations during their first semester prior to co-facilitating presentations.
