Mass Shootings, Firearm Law & the Mental Health System

Objectives:

  • Participants will learn about the epidemiology of mass shootings, other firearm violence, and firearm suicides
  • They will understand the complicated relationship between the mental health system and mass shootings, and the difficulties in relying on that system to prevent this horrific occurrences
  • They will learn about legislation that prohibits certain groups of people from owning firearms, and mechanisms for temporarily removing firearms from dangerous people
  • Understand the scope of severity of the public health problem of firearm injury
  • Demonstrate better knowledge of legislation that could decrease firearm injuries
