Description

Structural violence refers to violence imposed by entire systems including social, political and economic violence, preventing marginalized people from having full access to resources and expression of their rights -- Violence Prevention Alliance

Would you like to be part of the first citywide summit on structrual violence in NYC? Would you like to join a coalition of community organizers, healthcare professionals, government officials, students, and many other public health advocates to undo structrual violence? Start by joining us on June 17th to discuss best practices, strategies and lessons learned across multiple sectors to address structural racism. The time is now!

Goals & Objectives

1. Expand and own the narrative of violence as a health issue in order to move beyond a criminal justice lens to prevent violence.

  • Activate public health and health care professionals and activists to mobilize all sectors in NYC.

2. Provide the structural context of violence as it intimately relates to the deep-rooted history and perpetuation of racism in NYC and the United States.

3. Share existing interventions and innovative practices in hospitals, neighborhoods, public health, legal, and social service-agencies that are transforming the violence prevention landscape.

  • Understand how hospitals can fund violence work and invest in upstream strategies.

  • Organize a NYC based hospital collaborative.

4. Strengthen local NYC movement that can identify and create promising policy solutions to advance violence prevention and denounce acts of violence.
