Event description
Vintage Base Ball at the DAP, presented by Duke Homestead!

About this Event

Join Duke Homestead State Historic Site at the historic Durham Athletic Park for a vintage base ball game on August 3 at 7pm. Admission to the game is $5; children under 4 years old will be admitted free. Game tickets can be purchased online through Eventbrite after June 15, as well as at the gate on game day. Enjoy a family-friendly evening out at the ball park complete with food trucks, “old fashioned” concessions, historic children’s games, and historic music.

The iconic Durham Athletic Park has hosted baseball since 1926, even an iconic baseball film, but Durham’s baseball roots are even deeper. We’re thrilled to have Mayor Steve Schewel throw the first pitch!

Players in this vintage game, including a team of local media members, will follow some of base ball’s earliest rules (the 1860s). Historic rules, uniforms, and equipment help to bring the past to life. The first century of baseball was marked by racial segregation and separate leagues for black and white athletes at the DAP until the 1950s; however, Duke Homestead welcomes all players to participate, honoring the struggles and achievements of the many players over the past 159 years who brought us the Durham baseball culture we know today.

We invite you to connect with the history of this sport, this place, and this community by enjoying a night out at the ball park.

The game is a fund raiser for the Duke Homestead State Historic Site and it is sponsored by the Duke Homestead Education and History Corporation (the site’s volunteer, non-profit support organization), the Durham Bulls, Measurement, Inc., and Stone Brothers and Byrd.
