2019 WINE EDUCATION CLASSES

Explore Wine Regions Around the World, without the Travel Expense!

California’s early pioneers quickly recognized Sonoma Valley as the ideal location to craft fine wines. Today, you can visit wineries that date back to the Gold Rush. With over 150 growing seasons, the passion and spirit of family-first approach to farming has been passed down through the generations.

Known as The Valley of the Moon, Sonoma Valley is both the name of the region and it’s largest AVA (not to be confused with Sonoma County). At the southeastern tip of Sonoma County, there are five very distinct AVA’s. Sonoma Valley wines radiate the region’s remarkable natural diversity. Steep mountains, rolling benchlands, fertile plains, cool coastal fog, and abundant California sunshine is just the beginning of the endless diversity. Nature has brought together the very best elements for wine growing and assembled them in one place.

Sonoma AVAs

BENNETT VALLEY–Sonoma Valley’s smallest AVA, nestled between three peaks (Taylor Mountain, Sonoma Mountain, Bennett Peak). The gap welcomes Pacific breezes that cool temperatures. Chardonnay rules in Bennett Valley, along with Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah.

LOS CARNEROS–Sonoma and Napa share this cool, highly marine-influenced region. The morning fog and afternoon winds keeps Los Carneros cool in the summer and warm in the winter, creating a refreshing paradox that gives grapes a little extra hang time.Great for classic cool climate varietals, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

MOON MOUNTAIN DISTRICT–The newest AVA is on the western slope of Mayacamas Mountains, beginning at 400 ft and rises above the valley floor to 2,700 ft peak. Constant bay breezes entire AVA. While home to the historic Monte Rosso Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon is now dominant on these hillside vineyards

SONOMA MOUNTAIN–At 2,300 ft. high, vineyards on Sonoma Mountain rise above the fog line, allowing grapes to ripen more fully in the extended hours of sunlight, but the altitude makes for chilly nights. Off the beaten path, Sonoma Mountain has a steep, rustic and faraway feeling. The soils are volcanic-based and exceptionally well-draining. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon flourish in this high-altitudeenvironment.

SONOMA VALLEY–Known as The Valley of the Moon, Sonoma Valley is both the name of the region and it’s largest AVA. Bordered by the Sonoma Mountains and stunning Mayacamas Mountain range. An “open” valley to the north and south, cool air flows down from the Pacific Ocean and up from San Pablo Bay. Over 15 distinctly different soil series found and farmed in Sonoma Valley. Of the dozen of grape varietals grown, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the most notable
