FAQ

Should I bring my instruments?
SURE! There will be lots of guitars and digital pianos on campus. You are encouraged to bring your guitar, bass or other instruments as there will be additional times for jamming and collaborating.

Are scholarships available?
YES! We are offering partial and complete scholarships for those in need. Church planters and non-US passport holders are encouraged to contact us for more details on scholarship opportunities. Email mattf@vineyardotr.org for more details or apply for a Vineyard USA Ethnic Diversity Scholarship.

What can expect from the host home?
We will connect you with your host in the weeks leading up to your arrival so you can make arrangements for parking, entry, etc.

Transportation?
Westside Vineyard has limited free parking if you travel by car. The church is near LAX, so students are encouraged to use Uber, Lift, public transit, or ride sharing from the airport.

Why is the Summer Session only for 18-35-year-olds? What’s the deal?
Great question. We are specifically targeting younger, emerging worship leaders for this event. It will allow us to tailor-make this event for that demographic. We love and value multi-generational teams and will have other events that are all-ages (like the Vineyard Worship Leader Retreats).

Mike O

Mike O’Brien
VSOW Director

For 18 years Mike served as the worship leader of Vineyard Community Church in Marietta, GA preparing thousands of weekend and special services under the leadership of one pastor. He oversaw a collective of 25+ musicians that wrote, recorded, and led worship services for VCC. That collective, Poured Out Like Wine, recorded 7 albums with over 15 published songs with Vineyard Worship USA.

Mike works as a producer, engineer, and mixer at Lucko Sound Studio. Since 1997 he has recorded dozens of local church and sing-songwriter projects including Miami Vineyard Live and Not Be Moved. Mike serves the Vineyard Movement and the church at large with worship team training and production. His blog themikeo.com is focused on the practical heart and skill teaching for the 21st-century worship leader.

Dan Wilt says, “Mike O’Brien is one of the Vineyard’s most articulate communicators on the topic of contemporary worship leadership. His ability to break down complex ideas into memorable phrases and move-forward practices is second-to-none. I wholeheartedly recommend that you invite Mike to work with you, your musicians, and your techs. You won’t regret it; he carries the heart of worship deep within him – and it spills out everywhere.”

Mike is currently a top contributor to WorshipTraining.com, an online training media library for worship teams. He has also done extensive worship team training throughout India. His heart is to come alongside the average worship joe in the trenches and help him or her champion a worship journey vision that serves the local church. Mike earned a B.A in Music from Kennesaw State University and an M.W.S at the Worship Studies from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. He lives in Atlanta GA with his wife Susan and son Ezekiel.

Sarah E

Sarah Elmer
Instructor

Sarah Elmer is a true East Coast girl who pastors at the Vineyard church in Chester Springs, PA. She has been married to her bff Josh for over a decade and is mom to three fantastic kids. Sarah fell in love with music when she was just a little girl, army crawling under the pews of her church while her grandmother directed the choir. Memories of sitting in the glow of the stain glass windows flood her mind every time she hears classic hymns like “In the Garden” or “At the Cross.” These moments were just the beginning of her pursuit of music and beauty. Sarah has sung ever since she can remember and has had the incredible privilege to have studied with some fantastic classically trained vocalists since the age of twelve. While her teachers wanted her to devote herself to musical theater and opera, things changed when she walked into a dank, cinderblock, industrial garage that was spray painted black and was full of sweaty teenagers singing rock songs and crying out to God. The presence of God was so tangible in that room and like no other she had ever experienced before! Ever since that moment, she has been committed to pursuing God through this expression of worship and inviting others into that same space.

With over 15 years of Worship leading experience and 10+ years of being in vocational ministry, Sarah is passionate about seeing others grow as leaders, pastors, and musicians while doing the same herself. Being trained in the classical vocal technique, she cares (almost TOO much) about seeing people take care of their voice in a way that will allow them to be in ministry for a long time and after seeing both the highs and lows in ministry, Sarah also cares deeply about seeing people care for their hearts and souls in a way that will keep them in ministry and in health for the long haul.

Joshua M

Joshua Miller
Instructor

Joshua has been married to his wife, Alicia, for 6 years. They have three children (Florence 3, Lenora 2 and Eloise 6 months). Joshua and his family moved from Columbus, Ohio to serve at the Desert Vineyard in Lancaster, California, where he is the Executive Pastor and Alicia is the Counseling Director.

In his 18 years of ministry experience, Joshua has served in many roles and in multiple churches both large and small. One of his primary roles through the years has been in Worship Arts Ministry. He has been a part of consulting and leadership development for churches who are looking to make the necessary changes to their church culture and to have a thriving worship community. His heart and passion is to help people connect with God in worship, to grow in their faith through teaching, to be a bridge builder in relationships between generations, denominations, race and culture.

In developing worship communities, Joshua focuses on three things… Spiritual Growth, Relational Connection and Musical Excellence. One of Joshua’s favorite, challenging phrases for worship teams who are seeking to develop in these areas is, “Rehearsal is what you do together, after you have practiced individually.” This emphasizes that what we do as individuals (spiritually, relationally or musically) directly impacts what we can do together.

Alex F

Alex Faison
Instructor

Alex Faison is the Worship Director at Vineyard Church of Davenport, in Davenport Iowa. After making a hard decision of whether to finish out her full-ride music scholarship at the University of Northern Iowa or accept a job offer from her church to be the worship director in 2015, she felt a nudge from Holy Spirit to take the job at the age of 19. She is now in the transition to becoming the Worship Pastor. Alex has found her passion in worship leading through exposing God's love by creating atmospheres of freedom, and she is excited to continue to learn and teach more about God through worship. In August of 2018 Alex was featured on the Vineyard Soul: Generous God album and is the lead vocal on "Kyrie Elesion." She has also had opportunities to lead worship at several Vineyard retreats and conferences.

Matt F

Matt Farrand
Communications & Instructor

As a pastor’s son in a rural church, Matt grew up running sound, fixing gear, helping lead worship… whatever was needed to make Sundays happen. He was called to worship ministry at an early age and has been leading weekly services for over 20 years.

During that time, Matt has built and scaled systems to facilitate worship at every stage from church plant to large multisite congregations. His experience includes developing young worship leaders, multiplying teams, cultivating a songwriting community, church building projects, sound system design & installation, and helping to launch new locations.

Matt understands bootstrapping, shoestring budgets, strategic thinking, and creative problem-solving. Whether technology, music theory, or theology, he enjoys passing on practical knowledge to other worship leaders. Pastor Rick Olmstead says, “Matt's heart to train and empower others had blessed our church and reinvigorated our worship gatherings on Sundays.”

Matt studied worship arts at North Central University in Minneapolis, MN. He and his wife Teri live in Fort Collins, CO with their daughter Tatum and son Mac where Matt serves as worship pastor at Vineyard Church of the Rockies.

Vineyard Worship

Vineyard Worship exists as an organic extension of the Vineyard church movement in the USA (Vineyard USA). We are, in a phrase, "from the church, for the church.” We are not a music company first and foremost; we are a non-profit worship ministry. Our efforts will be centered in the cultivation and empowerment of the core value of worship in the Vineyard or more simply put "to help the local church experience God", rather than in a profit-driven music business model.
