Living The Dream

God has a Dream for this World

“For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made space through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or in heaven.”

Colossians 1:19-20

Every one of us is invited to cooperate, participate and join with God’s dream.

What does it mean for Vineyard churches in our region to announce, demonstrate and embody the Good News of Jesus? And more so, what does it mean for every person in our faith communities, young, old, male, female to live into this Message and become part of the Story God is telling the world? Our Vineyard distinctive, “Everyone Gets to Play” means everyone gets in on this action of loving God, loving neighbor and loving all of God’s creation through all sorts of opportunities as we follow the Way of Jesus.

I hope you will join me along with Ray Bakke, David Ruis, Kim Johnson, Alexis Mendez, Jer Swigart and others as we take time to be open to what God is inviting every one of us to participate in – this Story of God’s rescue mission for all of the Cosmos!

Included in the registration price will be a (BBQ)lunch onsite Thursday (with area competitions), and children’s ministry, nursery through 6thgrade.

I could not be more excited about how this Regional Gathering is shaping up. Please join us and find out what can happen when we gather for 2 ½ days to worship, hear amazing practitioners, form new (and strengthen existing) relationships and have a ton of fun together!

Rose Madrid Swetman – Regional Leader

RAYMOND J. BAKKE currently serves as Senior Associate of his own company, Ray Bakke Associates, where he continues to invest in the next generation of urban ministry leaders locally, nationally, and around the globe, by speaking, teaching, mentoring, consulting and publishing. RBA partners with those who are developing major cities as laboratories for community transformation, and provides opportunities to participate in the fellowship of that vast international network of leaders who leverage their influence to empower the church to be creatively missional in an urban world.

He is also Professor of Global Urban Studies for the Ray Bakke Centre of Urban Transformation based in Hong Kong, and affiliated with Bethel Bible Seminary in that same city.  Previously Ray served as Chancellor of English Programs for Union University of California from 2012-2014, and prior to that served as Chancellor, distinguished professor of global urban ministry, and member of the Board of Regents at Bakke Graduate University until December 31, 2011.

From 1959 through 1979 Dr. Bakke pastored inner-city churches in Seattle and Chicago.  During that time he also co-founded the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education (SCUPE), and taught Bible at Trinity College and Church History at McCormick Theological Seminary.  Between 1979 and 1989 he served as Professor of Ministry at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Ray founded International Urban Associates (IUA) in 1989. IUA animated a network of more than 100 urban-based church and mission leaders in many of the largest cities of the world.  Between 1990 and June, 2001, he was Professor of Global Urban Ministry at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He served as Senior Associate for Large Cities with the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelism from 1979 to 1995.

Since 1979 Dr. Bakke has personally led or served as a major resource leader for urban ministry consultations in more than 200 large cities on six continents.  He is author of THE URBAN CHRISTIAN (InterVarsity Press, 1987), a groundbreaking book on urban ministry which has been translated into eight foreign languages.  He is a collaborative author of ESPOIR POUR LA VILLE, DIEU DANS LA CITE, the first book of its kind done in and for French-speaking cities.  He is also a theme editor for the WORD IN LIFE STUDY BIBLE (Thomas Nelson, 1996).

Ray’s most recent publication is A SURPRISING JOURNEY (Bakken Books, 2009).  Other publications are STREET SIGNS (New Hope Publishers, 2006), A THEOLOGY AS BIG AS THE CITY (InterVarsity Press, 1997), THE EXPANDED MISSION OF CITY CENTER CHURCHES (International Urban Associates, 1998), which he co-authored with Sam Roberts, and A BIBLICAL WORD FOR AN URBAN WORLD (Board of International Ministries, 2000), which contains a series of Bible studies that both inspire and direct the reader to come to the texts in ways that bring engagement in Christian mission from a global perspective.

DAVID RUIS is a beloved worship leader, songwriter and communicator. Together with his wife Anita, he is also known as a church planter and pastor having established churches in Canada and the US within the Vineyard family of churches. David has also been instrumental in seeing Vineyard communities established in Nepal and India. Much of his focus tends to be in indigenous setting working amongst the poor as well as facilitating leadership development and fostering originality in songwriting and the arts in various cultural settings.

David has several worship songs published that are standards in Church worship, most notably You Are Worthy Of My Praise and Every Move I Make. His most recent album, When Justice Shines, was released through ION Records. David has also authored 2 books: The Worship God Is Seeking and The Justice God Is Seeking.

A burning passion for the Ruis family is the discovery of the practical and theological integration of creative worship expression with community that is engaged in a lifestyle that interfaces with the issues of poverty and social injustice. David and Anita have recently been asked to come on as National Leaders over the Vineyard Churches within Canada, while also continuing to travel internationally to speak and lead worship.

David and Anita currently reside in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

JER SWIGART (@jerswigart) is a church planter, a pastor, an organizer, and the co-founder of The Global Immersion Project. A peacemaking training organization, Global Immersion forms, equips, and mobilizes churches to be instruments of peace in our world.

As a modern-day peacemaker, Jer has found himself contending for restoration in beautifully bizarre corners of our global village. Whether in the tribes of northern Pakistan, the slums of India, the red-light districts of Southeast Asia, the conflict between Israel and Palestine, or the racial injustice of his own neighborhood, Jer loves people in a way that disarms violence and eliminates divides. His engagement within national and international conflicts has formed him into a guide for faith leaders as they seek to leverage their influence as instruments of peace in their homes, neighborhoods, churches, and world. When he’s not paddling whitewater, running high-desert trails, or snowboarding backcountry powder with his family, Jer travels the country and world as a practitioner, trainer, and speaker.  He’s the co-author of the recently released and award winning book, Mending the Divides: Creative Love in a Conflicted World (IVP, 2017).

KIM JOHNSON is a wife, mommy of many, RN and co-founder of Wide Awake International. She and her husband Jed moved from Oregon to Ukraine in 2013 with their 4 kids. Since then they have added two more children to their family through adoption and birth. The Johnson family lives in a small village in Ukraine where they work toward the deinstitutionalization of people with special needs. As a mom, Kim is passionate about teaching her kids that every life has value and to live their lives by simply saying YES to the next thing Jesus asks of them.

ALEXIS MENDEZ has been a bilingual educator for more than 20 years, teaching in classrooms with non-English speaking students in Mexico, in the San Francisco Bay Area, and in Salem, Oregon. Currently, she is on faculty at Corban University as an Assistant Professor of Education, teaching classes on Linguistics and English Language Learners. She and her family are passionate about advocating for immigrants and refugees, and they feel called to immerse into those communities and to walk alongside those that, though called foreigners by earthly governments, are not foreigners to God.  She has been married for 18 years to Cacho, who she met while studying in Mexico. They have three children who know that language and cultural differences are a reflection of God’s beauty.

ROSE MADRID SWETMAN, D.Min. is the Regional Leader for the Pacific Northwest. Rose has a passion to see the church live out the gospel in our time and context to be good news to our neighborhoods and communities and is committed to experimenting with new expressions of church, developing creative, collaborative and fruitful models of leadership for our day. Rose teaches at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology and is a member of the Vineyard USA Women in Senior Leadership Network. Rose and Rich have a blended family with eight children, their spouses and over twenty grandchildren!
