Michael Cerveris & Kimberly Kaye: Loose Cattle

LOOSE CATTLE is an alt-country, roots band based in New Orleans and New York. Formed in 2008 by Michael Cerveris and Kimberly Kaye, the band arose from the duo's shared affection for the musical and emotional rough and tumble of Johnny Cash’s duets with June Carter Cash, crossed with X’s John Doe and Exene.

Michael Cerveris is a West Virginia native and two-time Tony Award-winning actor (recently starring in Netflix's Mindhunter, Amazon’s The Tick, Fox’s Gotham, and HBO’s Mosaic) who served as a sideman for Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould before launching his own music career. Kimberly Kaye cut her teeth on the road, traveling the Warped Tour circuit as a member of a ska band before shifting her attention to roots music (with a recent detour directing and costarring in a wildly successful revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in New Orleans, garnering a Big Easy Award for her performance as Yitsak).

Loose Cattle nods to their punky pasts and country roots while also showcasing their often-poignant punch as an alt-country band. According to Cerveris, “There’s something about having a clear-eyed, borderline cynical eye on the world while dancing a country waltz with a big old heart on your sleeve that is the place where this band lives."

Weeks after their first show in a hotel lobby, they were invited to appear at Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series, and twice on NPR’s Mountain Stage broadcast live from West Virginia (once with Arlo Guthrie and again with Judy Collins, Ari Hest and Ben Sollee). They’ve appeared at Jazz Fest in New Orleans, Chickie Wah Wah, Siberia, The Hi Ho Lounge, d.b.a., Howlin’ Wolf, and Tipitina’s, in New York at Joe’s Pub, Mercury Lounge, City Winery, and Rockwood Music Hall, and at The Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette, LA. Loose Cattle’s recordings, including debut Live album, North of Houston, a 45rpm single, Pony Girl b/w St James Infirmary, and their 2017 Christmas album, Seasonal Affective Disorder (chosen one of Rolling Stone Country’s “Ten Country/Americana Records To Hear Right Now” and awarded 3 out of 4 stars by the LA Times) are all available from LowHeatRecords.com, and on iTunes, amazon.com, Bandcamp, and through your less discerning retail outlets.

About The Series

Since 1902, the Washington Square Hotel (formerly “The Earle”) has been a haven for writers, artists, and musicians. Take a minute and let these names sink in: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Bo Diddley, Maynard Ferguson, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Ernest Hemingway and Dylan Thomas. Yes, all of these greats—and more—have been guests at this iconic Greenwich Village landmark.

Washington Square Hotel hopes to build upon its rich history by launching a monthly salon series. 'Village Nights' will be curated and hosted by Greenwich Village musician, producer, author, legendary frontman for The Bongos, and longtime Villager, Richard Barone.

“Greenwich Village’s longstanding legacy as a center of cultural revolution and a haven for self-expression has always been best expressed through its nightlife. This freewheeling musical salon series celebrates the Village’s folk, jazz, and spoken-word heritage in a uniquely historic setting and offers a great night out!” says Barone.

  • Show times are at 6:30 p.m. in the hotel’s North Square Lounge. Doors open at 6pm.

  • Full dinner and drink menu available
  • $25 per person cover charge

  • Seating may be at the bar
