Anthony DeCurtis & Mary Lee Kortes

Anthony DeCurtis: Reads and performs from LOU REED: A LIFE

Anthony DeCurtis is a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, where his work has appeared for more than thirty years. He holds a Ph.D in American literature from Indiana University and is a Distinguished Lecturer in the creative writing program at the University of Pennsylvania. He collaborated with Clive Davis on Davis's autobiography, The Soundtrack of My Life, which was published by Simon and Schuster in February 2013 and rose to number two on the New York Times nonfiction best-seller list. He appears in "Soundtrack of Our Lives," a documentary based on the book that opened the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2017 and many other documentaries. His biography of Lou Reed, titled Lou Reed: A Life, was published by Little, Brown on October 10, 2017.

DeCurtis will read from LOU REED: A LIFE and perform songs from the Lou Reed/Velvet Underground catalogue accompanied by Richard Barone and special guests.

Mary Lee Kortes: Reads and performs from DREAMING OF DYLAN: 115 DREAMS ABOUT BOB

Perhaps Rolling Stone's David Fricke said it best when he proclaimed that "the bright bite in Kortes' voice combines the high-mountain sunshine of Dolly Parton with a sweet-iron undercoat of Chrissie Hynde. The New York Times added more praise to the singer/songwriter’s profile, describing her songs as “so meticulously crafted they sound completely natural.” The Village Voice agreed, calling her “a masterful songwriter”.

Mary Lee has released four CDs of original compositions under her performance name “Mary Lee's Corvette,” all to international acclaim and all landing on Billboard Magazine’s “ten best records of the year” in their years of release. She also released one album of covers – a complete, song-for-song recording of Bob Dylan’s classic Blood On The Tracks. It has been hailed by many critics as daring, and earned four stars from Rolling Stone for its “quietly direct magnificence.... Dylan likes this album so much he's featured one of the tracks on his web site.”

Kortes will read from her book, DREAMING OF DYLAN: 115 DREAMS ABOUT BOB, recently published by BMG Publications, and perform musical selections by Bob Dylan with special guests.

About The Series

Since 1902, the Washington Square Hotel (formerly “The Earle”) has been a haven for writers, artists, and musicians. Take a minute and let these names sink in: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Bo Diddley, Maynard Ferguson, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Ernest Hemingway and Dylan Thomas. Yes, all of these greats—and more—have been guests at this iconic Greenwich Village landmark.

Washington Square Hotel hopes to build upon its rich history by launching a monthly salon series. 'Village Nights' will be curated and hosted by Greenwich Village musician, producer, author, legendary frontman for The Bongos, and longtime Villager, Richard Barone.

“Greenwich Village’s longstanding legacy as a center of cultural revolution and a haven for self-expression has always been best expressed through its nightlife. This freewheeling musical salon series celebrates the Village’s folk, jazz, and spoken-word heritage in a uniquely historic setting and offers a great night out!” says Barone.

  • Show times are at 6:30 p.m. in the hotel’s North Square Lounge. Doors open at 6pm.
