History of the tour...  Roughly 20 years ago, the White Center Garden Tour was conceived as a single-year event by Peggy Weiss to create a positive news story about the community. The idea was that a free garden tour would attract people to White Center to learn about our interesting history, visit our local businesses, and go away with an improved image of the community we love.
Peggy sought to create a network of gardeners and others with an interest in horticulture, aesthetics and community development, who could help to build and strengthen civic life in the area. That first tour, which featured 10 residential, community-based and commercial gardens, was so surprisingly successful that she decided to make the tour an annual event.
With the help and support of local businesses, including the Chamber of Commerce, the tour has grown increasingly popular. The tour has showcased more than 160 garden sites and attracted more than 40,000 people (and untold revenue) to White Center. In 2005 I was asked to take over the tour, and was not ready to. In 2013 I made the decision that it is time. Thank you for joining us.  Have fun!

10 gardens will be featured on this tour, 3 having rain gardens. Rain gardens are a very important way of handling our rain fall to prevent erosion and allow for water filtering into the soil./
Come and learn about how this works!
Maps will be made as a download file from the Facebook page as well as online at http://villagegreenpn.com/?p=1482

PLEASE NOTE...Stephen Lamphears address number is correct, however the maps shows the wrong location... The garden is 4 blocks south of SW 116th on 18th Ave SW end of street - one block west of intersection of SW 116th & 16th/Ambaum SW.

I enjoy gardening, but it's more than that. It's a lifestyle.  Taking life slower and living in relationship with our earth and it's creatures. Listening deeply and paying attention to what the plants and animals need. I prefer the old ways of living. It's in my blood to work the soil. My great-grandmother grew all the food for 13 children on a farm in Ohio.

I grew up scavenging through barns full of old parts, with my father, to repair broken tubs, faucets, floors, cabinets, you name it, my dad fixed it for his customers. I ran through orchards and ate fruit until I was full and satisfied.   I spent my childhood in the woods hunting morel mushrooms.

I can't imagine not caring about the earth, not recycling, not working with my hands. It simply does not compute.

I hope you can see my passions for living sustainably in reverence for our precious earth and take a piece/idea of it with you to carry out in your own home.
