Event description

Description

Almost one year after Hurricane Maria, the revised Puerto Rico

death toll reached 2,975: 22% more than normally

might have occurred in the wake of the storm.

The VII Global Health Summit will focus on how we can build health resilience given the deadly impact natural disasters can have on those affected.

Opening Remarks:

  • Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms

  • CDC Deputy Director, Dr. Anne Schuchat will open the conference.

All eyes are on George Washington University’s just-released independent report revealing the actual death toll of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The lead author, Dr. Carlos Santos-Burgoa, will present the report’s findings. Experts will follow with a dynamic conversation on the broader lessons for preparedness in America and elsewhere, and the most promising innovations for building resiliency and health security.

Michelle Nunn, President and CEO of CARE USA, will close the summit with a fireside chat on the role NGOs play in helping communities respond and recover from natural disasters.
