Think about garden scenes in advance. Tell a story. Lead the viewer into the scenes and say something about the mood or character of the garden.

  • Consider your focal point or subject, a man made object or element in the garden can lead the viewer into the scene (for example, benches, pathways and garden features can serve as a focal point)

  • Support your main story idea with your approach to this photograph

  • Consider leading lines, composition, and balance

  • Give the viewer the beginnings of a garden story that could unfold in their imagination

Garden photography is often intuitive, based on enthusiastic response to beauty. Step back. Take time to look without worrying about taking a picture. Time spent looking and appreciating the garden is never wasted and it ends up making better pictures.

Scarlet Black (MFA) is an artist photographer best known for her garden photography and impressionist motion blur photographs. Her photographs of local parks are often seen on garden websites. Scarlet’s photographic prints have been exhibited in the Surrey Art Gallery, Visual Space Gallery in Vancouver, Newton Culture Centre and the White Rock Pop-Up Gallery. In addition to photography, Scarlet also creates a cappella performance art, as well as drawing and painting. She has been a guest speaker at local photography clubs and an advocate for local artists and photographers. She combines artistic values, personal narrative and photographic techniques to create strong and personal images. These three influences will be explored in her upcoming garden photography workshop.
