Event Details

Note. This Toastmasters Club meets on 1st, 3rd and 5th Friday of the month. Please select the date you wish to join us from the above menu and register for building security. One complimentary guest pass per entry.

Dec 15 will be the last meeting of 2017. There will be no meeting on Dec 29.

On Dec 15, 2017, Chicago ViewMasters will host an Open House Pitch Party to celebrate the holidays. You are invited to watch or to pitch an innovative idea worth spreading for a potential TED Talk* in the near future.

* You don't have to be a Toastmaster or Metropolitan Club of Chicago Member to watch or to pitch. This is a 2 minutes pitch speech about the idea, not the actual Talk. Please sign up now and plan to arrive by 11:30 pm or earlier on Dec 15. Everyone is welcome to attend and pitch as time permits. If this is your first visit, please scroll down to read all the details regarding visiting this club.

 ***** Pitch a TED Talk Idea  *****

Background With the popularity of TED Talk, many people are inspired to give a TED Talk. The very first step is to pitch the idea. You can start by "rehearsing" at ViewMasters on Dec 15. An effective pitching speech is worth developing.

Ground Rules You don't have to be a Toastmasters International or Metropolitan Club of Chicago Member to attend or to pitch. You can pitch for yourself or for someone whose idea you admire and support. Everyone is invited to pitch, within the meeting time frame from 12 to 1 pm. The more the merrier. Seasoned members and former TEDx Talk speakers will offer valuable evaluations as time permits. Space is limited. Please make your reservation now. The meeting will start right at 12. Please show up by 11:30 or earlier to submit your name for a draw to present.

Tips and Insights Here are some suggestions from our Distinguished Toastmaster member,  Amy Segami, aka TED Head. She was invited to speak at the inaugural TEDx event as well as attend the TED Global and TED Summit.  Besides being one of the finalists for the 4th season of TED Residency, she is the founder, executive producer and curator of TEDxIIT, the longest running independently organized TED event in Chicago.

1 TED and TEDx Talks are about the idea, not about the speaker.

2 Address the questions: Why? What? Who? How? (It's OK if you do not know exactly how to make it happen, yet. If you have an idea, mention it briefly, although that’s not necessary during the pitch.)

3 A disruptive idea and game changer is ideal. A blue sky idea or even a moon shot is welcome. Be creative, outrageous and original.

4 The idea can already have been accomplished, ongoing or simply a wish.

5 Present an idea that’s genuinely worth spreading and that you really believe in. Deliver with excitement, passion, and energy.

6 Watch a few TED Talks before showing up. However, you are not giving a TED Talk at this meeting. You are pitching for the idea of the talk.

You are invited as our guest to attend Viewmasters. We meet on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Friday, from 11:45 am to 1 pm. You DO NOT have to be a member of the Metropolitan Club of Chicago nor a current Toastmaster member to attend. This is an open community Toastmaster club.

When you enter Willis Tower, let the Lobby Receptionist know that you are attending Toastmasters Club meeting at Metropolitan Club. After showing your federal ID, you will receive a visitor pass and direction to go up to the 66th floor and find the meeting room announcement. We look forward to seeing you.

Two Ground Rules

1 Our meeting starts promptly at 12:00 pm, therefore, we request that you arrive at the meeting room 10 mins ahead or earlier. Please allocate extra time for the building security, elevator ride, and room navigation. It is highly recommended that you arrive at Willis Tower Lobby on or before 11:30 am. If you arrive early, you can always relax in the business lounge located on the 67th floor. You can catch up on your phone calls and emails as well as meeting other members.

2 If you are not early, you're late. If you arrive after the meeting is in session, please observe the late arrival protocol: Silence your smartphone, enter the "designated" door and take an empty seat.

Metropolitan Club of Chicago

Located on the 66th and 67th floors of the Willis Tower, The Metropolitan Club of Chicago encourages professional and social networking through a variety of special events and Club Committees.

In 1974, Mr. Arthur M. Wood, former Sears Roebuck & Co Board Chairman, championed not only the development of the Sears Tower but also the establishment of the tower’s Metropolitan Club. Since that time, the West Loop has flourished, and The Metropolitan Club has become known as the place to conduct business and meet Chicago’s “who’s who,” and has developed a reputation as Chicago’s finest business club. Understanding that the executives of today are vastly different from decades past, the Club provides our Members with the atmosphere, amenities and personalized service they seek. We encourage you to join in the celebration. Visit The Metropolitan Club and discover an extraordinary Member experience.
