Event description

Description

Chess is a wonderful game for young minds and teaches a wide variety of social, visual and thinking skills. In chess, young children have a world which THEY control, where they can make choices, and where they learn the consequences of their choices. In kindergarten chess club we use a dynamic approach to help young kids learn the game of chess at their level and at their speed.

Open to grades K-3.
If you have a 4th or 5th grade student interested in joining beginners chess please email viewlandschess@gmail.com

about Coach Wendy Ruppel: I have been teaching chess for over 14 years. I have actually been teaching at many levels for over 30 years. I have a PhD in Art History and have taught in a wide range of places: from colleges and universities to teaching reading and math to pre-school and elementary students. Education is very important to me and I love to teach! What I love about chess is the amazing variety of skills one one can teach through the game of chess. Kids learn real life skills learning this game. In addition to helping with math and reading skills, playing chess helps build resilience (learning how to recover from a mistake), helps develop impulse control (look and think before you move), and social skills (negotiating personalities across the board)—skills that last a lifetime. That’s why I teach chess.
