Location: Fleet Science Center, 1875 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101

December 13—Video Game Technology in the Operating Room with:

Dr. Sonia Ramamoorthy - Chief of colon and rectal surgery at UC San Diego Health

Dr. Larry Smarr - Harry E. Gruber Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Founding Director, California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology

Dr. Jurgen Schulze - Associate research scientist at Calit2’s Qualcomm Institute and associate adjunct professor at Jacobs School of Engineering

3D visuals, standard in even the most basic video games today, are not routinely available to surgeons, but the benefits of the technology can help save lives in difficult (or even routine) surgeries. 3D imagery and virtual reality created from 2D MRI images allow surgeons to see things and anticipate problems that they would not have seen on 2D images. High-tech surgical robots that work similarly to video game controllers can be connected to laptops, making it possible to combine the imagery taken by the surgical robot with the 3D imagery created before the operation. Join Dr. Ramamoorthy, Dr. Larry Smarr and Dr. Jurgen Schulze as they discuss a gratifying and “mind-blowing” experience of the robotic surgery, which was aided in advance by an experiment – the creation of dramatic, data-driven computer models of his abdomen and affected organs and a life-sized 3D-printed model of his suspect organ. They will also review the latest technological advances in an operating room and where they would like to see the technology advance in the future.

Dr. Ramamoorthy, Dr. Larry Smarr and Dr. Schulze will be available for a meet & greet opportunity at 6 p.m. in the Theater Lobby.

The talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Theater.

Please note: During this event, there will be photography and video recording. By attending this event you consent to and authorize without further compensation the use and reproduction of any film or photographs.

FLEET SCIENCE CENTER

"The Fleet Science Center seeks to inspire lifelong learning by furthering the public understanding and enjoyment of science and technology."

- Our Mission Statement

The Fleet Science Center features more than 100 interactive science exhibits, as well as major traveling exhibitions. Visitors can touch a tornado, create colored shadows, examine the vibration of guitar strings and get their hands on a variety of intriguing scientific phenomena.

The Fleet Science Center is also home to the world's first (and San Diego’s only) IMAX Dome Theater, presenting the biggest films on the planet. Its unique configuration wraps the audience in images and provides the illusion of being suspended in space. The Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Dome Theater takes audiences from outer space to under water and every place in between, and films are generally suitable for all ages. San Diego's only Giant Dome Theater also plays host to planetarium shows, including the monthly Sky Tonight show, which is led by an astronomer and followed by outdoor telescope viewing, courtesy of the San Diego Astronomy Association.

The Fleet Science Center is open 365 days a year, starting at 10 a.m.

We are located in beautiful Balboa Park, home to many of the city's museums, as well as beautiful gardens, intriguing architecture and picturesque fountains. Since our opening in 1973, the Fleet has been the best-attended museum in Balboa Park and a top attraction in San Diego. For more information, visit our website at www. fleetscience.org or call (619) 238-1233.

The Fleet Science Center offers:

  • More than 100 interactive exhibits
  • The Tinkering Studio, where you can experiment, invent and create
  • Kid City, an exhibition just for kids ages five and under
  • Plus, Craveology Cafe and the North Star Science Store
