With the successful passage of Referendum 74, voters in Washington state— and three others with similar initiatives— dealt a historic victory for marriage equality for same sex couples. Not only will this mean a concrete improvement in the lives of many, but it is a promising indication of how far popular consciousness has shifted in favor of acceptance and support for LGBTQ rights. However, the struggle for full equality and liberation is far from over. On a federal level, the Defense of Marriage Act continues to deny thousands of rights to same sex couples. Discrimination in employment, housing and elsewhere remains widespread— and perfectly legal in most states. Ostracism, harassment and violence remain a fact of life, especially for transgendered community, and serve to reinforce rigidly defined gender and sexual norms imposed on all of us. Join us for a discussion of the societal roots of gender and sexual oppression and how we can build on the victory of Referendum 74 to fight for true sexual liberation for everyone.
