Vestibular Ocular Motor Assessment on the Concussed Athlete.
Speaker: Ross Oshiro MS, ATC and Troy Furutani, MS, ATC
- Discuss the Principle and current research of Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) on concussed athletes
Discuss how VOMS can be used to assess and determine clinical trajectories for concussed athletes
Practical hands on lab demonstrating and developing proficiency on administering the VOMS on participants attending the lab
FREE to Hawaii Athletic Trainers Association members only. Must provide Hawaii AT registration.
The use of VOMS during a concussion assessment requires practice and attention to subtle eye movement. VOMS is a relatively new assessment tools used to evaluate concussions and athletic trainers may not be familiar or proficient at the skills necessary to perform the assessment.
Attendees will be able to discuss and explain the rational for using VOMS during a concussion assessment and to determine clinical trajectories from results of the VOMS examination. Attendees will also be able to demonstrate the VOMS assessment.
Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening has been demonstrated to be an essential component of concussion assessments and management. Athletic Trainers need to be competent and proficient at administering VOMS to best manage concussed athletes.
