About this event
NOTE: THE TIME FOR THIS EVENT HAS CHANGED.
Mel Ryane, in a return engagement to Flatiron Writers Room, will teach this workshop for writers wishing to read their work aloud in digital format.
The workshop will begin on Day One with a 3-hour course on technique. Writers will learn to scan text, examine rhythm and pace, choose those juicy words, prep their bodies and voices, play to the video camera, properly use lighting and, above all, lift their work into a compelling reading. This workshop has proven invaluable as an editing tool. Prep, practice, present.
On Day Two, Mel will coach writers one-on-one in 20-minute sessions on their readings—you will learn valuable information from the guidance she gives you and your classmates. Day Three, as needed depending on class size, will continue as Day Two.
Comments from writers about Mel Ryane's class:

Class meets online via Zoom videoconferencing Saturday, October 3, 2020 1pm-4pm EST; Sunday October 4, 2020 1pm-3pm EST; and (if needed) Monday October 5, 2020 5pm-7pm EST.
Cost: $125 General Admission. Partial need-based scholarships are available for this workshop. Registration is through Eventbrite only: we are no longer accepting registrations by check.
Mel Ryane lives in Los Angeles with her husband, William and their dog, Linus. Her memoir, Teaching Will: What Shakespeare and 10 Kids Taught Me That Hollywood Couldn't (Familius) was called "lively" and "funny" by Publishers Weekly and "hilarious...a bravura performance" by Kirkus Reviews. Born and raised in Canada where, as a teenager, she started a career as a classically-trained theatre actor, Mel eventually moved to New York City before settling in southern California. She began her writing career after working as an actor and as a dialogue coach in film and television. Mel was accepted into the American Film Institute's prestigious Directing Workshop for Women, where she wrote and directed a short film. Her screenplay On the Head of a Pin was a semi-finalist in the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting. Her writing has been published in the L.A. Times. Mel is currently at work writing novels.
