Event description

Description

OWA has put their “A” Team together to bring you the most dynamic, informative and authoritative vernal pool experience. Vernal Poolooza offers up the ‘rock stars’ of vernal pool and wetland science with a diverse array of presentations, exhibitions and field experiences. You will be dazzled by the spectacle as we heard about Benny & The Jets, “You're gonna hear electric music Solid walls of sound”. This Poolooza event will have two days of conference style presentations with triple breakout sessions, featured author book signings, creature ‘show & tells’ and a selection of Saturday morning field trips to suit all kinds of vernal pool adventurers.

KEYNOTE PRESENTERS:

David FitzSimmons
Thursday, April 4, 2019, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
If You Build It, They Will Come: Vernal Pools, Fauna, & Fun!"

David FitzSimmons will share his experiences studying, photographing, and writing about vernal pools. Learn about the ecology of these ephemeral wetlands, as well as the natural history of their inhabitants. David will explain how you can build your own environmentally responsible vernal pool and read pages from his new children's picture book Salamander Dance. Enjoy underwater photos and watch videos documenting the annual spring migration of amphibians.

Dr. Betsy Colburn
Friday, April 5, 2019, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Puddles and Pools, Problems and Puzzles:
What do we Know about Vernal Pools, and What Questions Remain?
Vernal Pools defy simple definitions – the range of flooding regimes, locations within the landscape, basin characteristics, adjacent and in-pool plant communities, and animal species that can be found in vernal pools is remarkably broad. This talk will explore the variety of vernal pools and their wildlife, look at some aspects of their natural history, address a number of questions and consider some recent advances in our knowledge, and identify a few areas where our understanding is still limited – and where citizen-scientists can contribute to advancing knowledge.

SPECIAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP:

Friday, April 5, 2019, 2:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.
by Ian Adams
iPhone Landscape & Nature Photography

This extended session permits Ian to go into a great deal of depth both on the technical details of the camera function of the iPhone and with the broader concepts of great photography. You will learn how to use your iPhone or Android smartphone to take sharp, well-composed landscape & nature photographs with tips on controlling exposure, focus, color, lighting & composition. The best phone settings for photography, recommended camera and editing apps, and useful photography accessories for your smartphone.

Ian Adams is an environmental photographer, writer and educator specializing in Ohio’s natural, rural, historical and garden areas. Twenty-two books of his color photography have been published. His latest book, Ohio in Photographs: A Portrait of the Buckeye State was released by Ohio University Press in March, 2017.

LODGING:

No on-campus facilities at Ashland University are available at the time of our conference. You may choose to stay wherever you like. We have negotiated a special rate at one of the best local hotels. Each guest will call in their own reservation with their own form of payment.
A block of rooms has been secured by Ohio Wetlands Association at the Holiday Inn Express located just off SR 250 west of the interchange with I-71. This location is about 4 miles from the Convocation Center and the conference. When you call, let them know that you are coming to the Vernal Poolooza Conference run by Ohio Wetlands Association. The "Queen" room rate is $89 plus tax per day.

The block of rooms is for single or multiple nights, beginning Wednesday April 3 through April 5. If you want one of these rooms, do not delay!

The cut-off for this rate is March 3rd, a good month before the conference. We are advised that local hotel availability may be scarce at that time due to other events in the immediate area. Cancellation is possible with 24 hour notice. Room charge is subject to 13% tax. Proof of tax-exempt status must be presented before or at check in.
