- Cork & Fork Notes:
From the beginning of my experience in wine, Vérité was a guiding star in perfectionism in winemaking. I was fortunate enough to be mentored by Chalres Gendrot who worked closely with my family for 7 years in our retail locations. Charles Gendrot worked with Vérité as their lead oenologist in the early 2000s. His father was France's leading consulting oenologist. Famed winemaker Graham Weerts of award winning South African winery Capensis said of Monsier Gendrot Senior, "He was as good as Michel Rolland." While in California, I had the great pleasure of dining with Pierre Seillan's daughter and winemaker, Hélène. It is clear the label is in excellent hands. -- notes by Antoinette Landragin
- About the Winery:
Vérité Estate Winery is tucked into the rolling hills of Chalk Hill. Their wines reflect the region’s diverse terrior. The vineyard is cared for by the vigneron, Pierre Seillan. He “seeks, through wine, to give voice to the truth of the soil.” Recently, Vérité's three blends, Le Désir, La Joie and La Muse, received seven 100-point scores. Never had a Sonoma County winery receive this many perfect scores. Vérité Estate Vineyard consistently releases critic acclaimed Bordeaux varieties and has established itself as a leader among the most established Bordeaux chateaux. Sixth-generation French vigneron Pierre Seillan is the winemaker at Château Lassègue near Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux, as well as at Vérité in Sonoma County, where he works with his daughter Hélène Seillan, assistant winemaker. -- notes by Forbes and Beau Wine Tours
About the Assistant Winemaker:
Hélène Seillan spent her childhood in both France and California, surrounded by family and friends for whom winemaking was as much a passion as it was a profession. Following in her father’s footsteps, Hélène pursued a career in winemaking and began splitting her time between Sonoma County and Saint-Émilion. Starting in 2006, she served as assistant winemaker for her father at the family’s Bordeaux estate, where she worked on all aspects of winery management showing the same talent, passion and ability as her father. Hélène holds a degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the Institut Rural de Vayres in Bordeaux. -- notes by NiceWines.
More about the winery;
Verite is the vision of two men: the late Jess Jackson and French-born winemaker Pierre Seillan, who together imagined a world where Sonoma County could produce some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. A native of Gascony, where his family grew grapes and made wine, Seillan worked in the Loire Valley and Bordeaux before settling in Northern California in search of the best soils for making red wines.
Over time the two focused in on 50 “micro-cru” sites across four Sonoma County appellations that they felt would contribute to the best wines. This includes vineyards planted in Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Chalk Hill and Bennett Valley, planted to the five predominant Bordeaux red varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
The grapes go into only three distinct wines made by Seillan every year: La Muse, La Joie and Le Desir. La Muse, Seillan’s best wine, is centered on Merlot, with smaller percentages of other grapes. La Joie is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant and built to age, while Le Desir celebrates underappreciated Cabernet Franc.
INSIDE INFO: Pierre Seillan is also the winemaker for Château Lassègue in Bordeaux and Arcanum in Tuscany, where Cabernet Franc also surprisingly thrives.
