Friday, October 11th

Through interviews with both victims and instigators, Nanfu Wang, a first-time mother, breaks open decades of silence on a vast, unprecedented social experiment that shaped — and destroyed — countless lives in China.

Join us for a screening of the film and conversation with Director Nanfu Wang to follow.

5:30 PM: Screening of One Child Nation

7:00 PM: Panel discussion and Q&A with director Nanfu Wang, moderated by Pamela Sherrod Anderson of Kartemquin Films

NANFU WANG (Director, Producer, Cinematographer, Editor) is an Emmy Award®-nominated and Peabody-winning filmmaker based in New York City. Wang’s feature debut, Hooligan Sparrow, was shortlisted for the 2017 Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature and received two Emmy nominations. Since its premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, the doc has won more than 20 awards internationally, including a Peabody Award, a Cinema Eye Honor Award, the George Polk Award, an IDA Documentary Award and an Independent Spirit Award. Wang’s second feature documentary, I Am Another You, premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2017, won two special jury awards and opened theatrically in September of that year.

PAMELA SHERROD ANDERSON is an award-winning writer, independent filmmaker, playwright, journalist and educator. She has rich and varied experience as a writer, reporter and editor at the Chicago Tribune and United Press International, commissioned playwright, published in "Black Women's Health Book: Speaking for Ourselves" anthology, writer-director-producer of short films and full-length documentaries. Screenings include Black Harvest Film Festival at Chicago's Gene Siskel Theater, Reel Sisters Film Festival in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Le Kadjinol in Dakar, Senegal; and stage productions at Transient Theatre.

All SCA screenings are OVERBOOKED to ensure seating capacity in the theater, therefore seating is not guaranteed based on RSVPs. Doors will open a half hour before the event begins and the RSVP list will be checked in on a first-come, first-served basis until the theater is full. Once the theater has reached capacity, we will no longer be able to admit guests, regardless of RSVP status. If there are additional seats, and you have not RSVPed, we will admit on a first-come, first-served basis after all rsvps have been seated.
