Event Details

VerbTribe for Teachers is for you if:

  • You are a K-12 classroom or homeschooling/unschooling teacher who has allowed work to take the place of your creative spirit. You long to write and create again.
  • You want to take some time for yourself, in service to your own yearnings.
  • You want to re-energize your own creative spirit to be more innovative in the classroom and in your personal life.
  • You’re a poet who has lost his/her muse in the prep and planning of teaching.
  • You want to spend time in community with other amazing educators.

You've started and stopped many times, your intentions to revitalize your own creativity and that of your students bogged down by testing requirements and the demands of administrators--or the demands of life.

That’s what VerbTribe for Teachers is for.  It’s for the K-12 teacher or homeschooler/unschooler who is committed to their own creativity, and the creativity of their students, but needs help and support to get there.

If that sounds like you, let’s sit down and write and think together--and in the process find our creative grounding again. Our focus will be on revitalizing your own creativity at home and in the classroom--and our primary tool will be writing.

When you join the VerbTribe 37-day class, you won’t be asked to lock yourself in your room and write for five hours a day, but it does involve a daily commitment to create.  I’ll be here to guide the way. All you need to do is write and trust that it adds up. It truly does. Threads show themselves when you make sure that inspiration strikes every morning at 9am or every evening at 9pm — your schedule, your way, but writing consistently is what members of the VerbTribe do.

We’re going to focus on process, not product. We’re going to focus on writing as a verb. The act of writing. The sitting down, the pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. Only then we can focus on form, content, voice. Each are vital. You can know everything there is to know about writing–but if you’re not cultivating a writing practice, it won’t help.

Together, we’ll dive into the art of writing--and teaching. We’ll explore ways to stop making excuses and get writing. I’ll be your writing coach, mentor, and nudger.

We’re going to do this for 37 days at a time–because I believe you can change your life in 37 days. In fact, I know you can!

This class is 37 days long.

After 37 days in the VerbTribe for Teachers you will have:
    •    A clear understanding of the patterns that have stopped you from writing in the past--and that have kept you from exploring your creativity in the classroom
    •    The capacity to write and create each and every day (intention) -- regardless of what is going on in your daily life (circumstance)
    •    Tools to improve both your writing process and product--and that of your students
    •    A clear view of what you long to say in the world and how you want to reach your students
    •    A community of peers to stay in touch with as support for each other
    •    A way into your unique voice as a teacher

What you get:
    •    My attention, encouragement, and expertise as the author of six books, including the bestsellers, Life is a Verb and Creative is a Verb.
    •    Provocative, imagination-busting daily writing and thinking prompts – every single day for the duration of the time you’re enrolled.
    •    A structure for writing and creativity–and accountability.
    •    Four 75-minute group workshop calls for learning and coaching on June 27, July 11, July 25, and August 2nd.
    •    Recordings of every call for you to listen to on your schedule.
    •    Members-only private group for community support and further feedback from me for the duration of the class (37 days), plus two weeks (and it can be continued by the community indefinitely).
    •   Alumni of this course will receive a 10% discount on subsequent VerbTribe classes offered in 2012

What I ask you to bring:
    •    Commitment to developing a sustainable practice of creative work (whether writing or otherwise)
    •    Commitment to doing the work.
    •    Commitment to reading the work of others and supporting others in the community.
    •    Commitment to your own voice.
    •    Commitment to showing up–fully.
    •    Commitment to never apologizing for your work–and never making excuses.

The class runs from June 27 - August 2, 2012.

VerbTribe for Teachers is offered at 50% of the usual price for VerbTribe classes: $175 (a $350 value).

Life is short. Write accordingly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How will this benefit my students (other than that I will be a calmer, more creative person/teacher)?

Because this is an introspective as well as community experience, your students will benefit from your renewed sense of "why" in the classroom. They will also enjoy the writing prompts and exercises that you can translate directly to the classroom. And because you will be linked to innovative educators from across the country and around the world, they will benefit from the shared experiences of many dedicated teachers who can offer perspective, real-world examples, and ways to engage differently and deeply in the classroom.

Can all participants listen to the recordings any time after the initial phone conference- numerous times if necessary?

Yes, all the calls will be recorded and available to participants for download and listening forever!

Why should I take this class from Patti?

Patti started her career as a program director creating curricula for teacher education at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the International Council on Education for Teaching, and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Having seen the needs of educators from a national (and international) perspective, she has a keen sense of what it means to teach--and to learn.

Over the past eight years, she has stepped back into the world of teacher education as her book, Life is a Verb, became a text book for classes across the U.S., speaking to teachers and educators at national conferences, in the classroom, and in special training programs for teachers in places like the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT).

Patti is the author of hundreds of published articles about learning, global leadership, diversity, and writing, and has published six books. Life is a Verb was one of five finalists in the prestigious "Books for a Better Life" awards and both Life is a Verb and Creative is a Verb were nominated for the "Book of the Year" by the Southern Independent Booksellers Association.

Her VerbTribe classes have gotten rave reviews from writers all over the world.

VerbTribe is pure magic. The real kind. The life-changing kind. Conjured from the brilliant mind and boundless heart of Patti Digh, this is, hands down, the BEST way to really get your writing on. Patti’s served up something that’s wildly fun, deliciously different and profoundly effective – a special sauce that dissolves excuses in the blink of an eye, opens doors you never knew existed and gets you in the most gorgeous word-ey groove ever. I felt different by day three. And, really, this is about so much more than writing. VerbTribe has given me new eyes. The awesomeness that I’ve experienced here will stay with me for life. – Fabeku Fatunmise

“After only 8 days, I am remembering WHY I write and HOW I write. The daily work seems so simple and easy, yet it has taken me deep into places I had forgotten and am so glad to be rediscovering. This course is about so much more than just creating a regular writing practice. It is about connection and adventure and exploring our edges, using our words to find the way.” -Ruth Davis

“VerbTribe = 37 days toward building a sustainable writing practice. We’re on day 10. This has already been a game changer for me with most changes having nothing to do with writing. That Patti Digh lets people believe she’s all southern charmy and genteel but she’s an ass kicker of the highest caliber…” -Martha Atkins

“Never before have I been a part of such an expansive, creative, supportive community of writers all showing up to learn and grow as writers and to develop a daily practice of writing. My life is changing as a writer but also as a person. Patti’s course, her insights and gentle guidance have opened my heart to deeper, more truthful intentions for why I want to write in the first place and how I want to be in the world. Her daily prompts and task activities have taken me to levels I have never been before, and have afforded me the opportunity to both see what gets in the way and what can serve my writing better. Before my own eyes and by witness of my Tribe and Patti (and my witnessing of them, for this is a shared experience in VerbTribe) I am discovering where the heart of writing lives and breathes and I am bringing it to the page, without apology, as an offering to the sacred act of writing and to standing and living in the truth of our own voices. So naturally, I’m heading into her Master Class next!-Jenn Forgie

“If you are looking to create a sustainable writing practice, looking for a writing group/tribe to support your practice then take a look at VerbTribe ~ I am in the midst of VerbTribe with Patti Digh and I am LOVING it ~ she is pushing boundaries, cracking open the dragons that keep me from the page, making me take a look beneath the layers and pushing me/us to ‘Sit down and write.’” -Carmen Taggart

What makes this class different from other VerbTribe classes?

While there are some elements of the other VerbTribe classes that will remain the same (our online classroom, the teleseminar format, daily writing prompts), the content is fundamentally different and designed specifically with teachers in mind.

How does it apply to teachers directly?

Each day’s assignments will also include a “classroom spark” for use in your classroom next year--an idea, a project, a writing prompt you might use with your own students. This course also will create a strong community of teachers who will share experiences, resources, ideas, and support with one another.

What if I teach math or science?

Writing is universal. Creative expression is universal. The mindset needed for math and science is closely related to creative expression (in music, for example). Everyone is a writer. We all have a need to express who we are, most deeply. This course is intended for teachers across all subject areas, not just writing teachers.

What if I suck at writing?

First of all, that’s a story you’re telling yourself--perhaps someone (a teacher?) once told you that and you’ve hung onto that story for dear life? And secondly, VerbTribe 4 Teachers is focused on process, not product. The learning is in the doing, not the outcome.

What if I'm afraid?

We’re all afraid. That’s what is so powerful about community. As Henri Nouwen said, “Community is not a place where we dazzle the world with our combined talents. Community is a place where we acknowledge our shared poverty and see it as a true source of new life.” VerbTribe is a safe space in which to say, “I’m afraid.”

What if I believe I have nothing to say?

That is what this class is about. Through writing, you will find your voice. You don’t find your voice first, then write. It is the other way around.

What is the time commitment per day?

The actual writing time required is only 10-20 minutes a day. Many participants find great value in interacting in our online classroom with other participants, which can take more of your time. Like life, you get out of it what you bring to it. The course materials will be available for two months after the session ends, so if you aren’t able to dedicate the time during the course, you can access the activities afterward.

What technology do I need to participate?

You will need a computer and internet connection, as well as a phone. In addition, a digital camera is helpful in capturing your process through the course, but is not required.
