BAFTA Award Winner and two time Academy Award nominee Brenda Blethyn OBE is one of the UK’s most loved and respected actors.
She worked as a secretary for ten years before changing career altogether and enrolled at the Guildford School of Acting in Surrey. By 1975 she had joined the National Theatre Company.
Numerous television roles followed showcasing her considerable talent before a move to the silver screen, most notably in Mike Leigh’s Secrets & Lies which earned Brenda a BAFTA Award and a nomination at the 69th Annual Academy Awards.Today, most familiar to TV audiences as ITV and BritBox’s cantankerous detective Vera, Brenda has many other television credits to her name but is fondly remembered for her role as Mim in Outside Edge alongside Timothy Spall.
She has consistently delivered outstanding work and was nothing short of superb in Little Voice alongside Michael Caine and Jane Horrocks. She is an Ambassador for several charities and has run three London Marathons for the charity Children with Leukemia. Brenda was awarded an OBE in 2003 in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for her services to drama.
