As a little boy, Joe Calcagno’s Nona introduced him to the freshest and finest Italian food available as he accompanied her on her rounds of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn’s best shops for freshly killed chicken, sausage, just-baked bread, pastries, vegetables, ravioli and everything else needed for a traditional Sunday dinner. He also helped out in the family garden, growing tomatoes, eggplant and peppers to be canned, and wrapping fig trees for the winter.
“My grandparents and my parents were true Foodies way before anybody knew what that was,” says Joe. “They owned restaurants and I grew up working side by side with them. As I got older I too developed the love and passion that comes with making and serving something special. So many of the best times of my life were spent with my family working, shopping, preparing and enjoying each other’s company over a great meal. I only hope I can be as inspiring to others as they were to me.”
Today Joe owns a few of his own Italian restaurants, keeping his family’s tradition alive. Capizzi, the restaurants’ namesake, is a small town in Sicily (A province of Mesina) where Joe’s parents and grandparents grew up. His restaurants are a tribute to them and to a time when things were simple, with meals made fresh with a sense of pride.
Joe opened Capizzi Pizzeria & Wine Bar in Hell’s Kitchen in 2010. Since then it has drawn increasingly large crowds, having garnered kudos early on not only from patrons but from food critics and TV personalities. It was voted Reader's Choice Best Pizzeria in 2012 by Village Voice, as well as Best Healthy Meal! The pizzeria has been seen everywhere on TV from Travel Channel to Fox 5. Steve Harvey lauds Capizzi as "the best pizza I've had in New York, hands down" and Tony Tantillo raves,"The prices and quality of the ingredients can't be beat."
What’s more, Capizzi is voted the number 1 Restaurant in the 2011 Trip Adviser. In fact, it has had a Trip Adviser Certificate of Excellence since it’s been open and is in the Trip Adviser Hall of Fame, which requires maintaining a Certificate of Excellence for 5 consecutive years!
Capitalizing on this great success, Joe is now opening a Capizzi restaurant on Staten Island, transforming a 3,600 sq. foot space into a quintessential Italian grandmother’s home adjacent to a beautiful Tuscany including an outdoor veranda. Advance notices are equally impressive for Capizzi Pizza and Wine Bar in Staten Island, as featured in the Staten Island Advance - http://www.silive.com/dining/index.ssf/2015/10/capizzi_restaurant_opens_in_gr.html.
Serving fresh homemade pastas, pizzas and other authentic Italian Dishes made the old fashioned way, the restaurant is filled with family photos and furnished to resemble an Italian grandmother’s home. You’ll dine at a traditional dining room table and be served an authentic Italian holiday meal. Whatever you order, having a meal here feels just like eating a home-cooked meal at your Nona’s table.
All the pastas, raviolis, deserts, etc. are made here in-house, fresh from scratch every day. The genuine wood-burning oven (built by Joe himself) is used to create some of the finest oven-roasted meat & fish dishes, along with amazing pizzas reminiscent of old world Italy. Capizzi uses local fresh fish, produce and imports, many of their ingredients arriving from Sicily weekly.
Now, Joe’s own family shares in his labors of love, which includes his restaurants, Italian Imports and manufacturing of his special Bel Evo Extra Virgin Olive Oil, used in all Capizzi dishes, at his facility in New Jersey. His products are sold wholesale to over 200 restaurants in the U.S. northeast. Joe’s son, Anthony, works at the family's olive oil company, his 23-year old daughter, Briana, while attending graduate school, works at Capizzi part time out front, and his high-school age son, Nicholas, busses tables on weekends. “My folks infused me with a sense of love and pride, not only in food, but in a job well done,” says Joe. “I get a lot of pleasure out of serving something really special.”
Joe and his chefs makes Capizzi’s Raviolis and Pasta strands from scratch, as well as one of the finest Vera Cucina Italiana dishes. Step back in time to a place where things are simple, fresh and made with a sense of pride.
