Building Successful University Startups

This panel discussion, featuring two successful UC Davis innovators and entrepreneurs, will provide insights from their experiences building startup companies enabled by technologies developed at the university.  The panelists will discuss what they learned from their journeys with Chirp Mircosystems and Aeroseal and provide advice for aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs.  Chirp Microsystems, a startup commercializing high-performance ultrasonic sensors, was recently acquired by TDK Corporation and Aeroseal, a company focused on duct sealing technology, was acquired several years ago by Carrier (part of the UTC Climate, Controls & Security unit of United Technologies Corp.).

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

David Horsley

David Horsley is co-founder and CTO of Chirp Microsystems Inc., a TDK Group company pioneering the use of MEMS technology for ultrasonic sensing. Dr. Horsley is also a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Davis, and Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 2004, he has been Co-Director of the Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center (BSAC), the National Science Foundation’s Industrial/University Collaborative Research Center (I/UCRC) focused on MEMS research. Dr. Horsley was Co-Chair of the 2016 IEEE Sensors Conference, Co-Chair of the 2017 Transducers Research Foundation Napa Microsystems Workshop, and he is the Co-Chair of the 2020 IEEE MEMS Conference. Dr. Horsley is a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award, the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award at UC Davis, the 2016 NSF I/UCRC Association’s Schwarzkopf Award for Technological Innovation, and has authored or co-authored over 150 scientific papers and holds over 20 patents.

Mark Modera

Mark started his career at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and is currently the Director of the Western Cooling Efficiency Center (WCEC) and the Energy and Efficiency Institute at UC Davis. Dr. Modera came to UC Davis in 2008, where in addition to directing the WCEC, he teaches engineering fundamentals and new HVAC courses. The WCEC currently consists of roughly 30 people working to facilitate the implementation of efficient HVAC technologies through manufacturer/utility/customer partnerships, as well as to develop and test new energy-efficient and peak-demand-sensitive HVAC technologies. In addition to his academic career, Mark has spent time in the business world, including founding, growing and selling a company based upon a technology he developed at LBNL – Aeroseal – and then working for the corporate buyer. He continues to provide technical and strategic consulting to that company, as well as to other start-up companies and large corporations.
