About this event

Join us for a discussion on how VC firms work, how to decide if venture investment is right for your business, and most importantly, what VC firms look for when deciding to invest. Here to demystify the world of venture capital is Matt Okoneski, Associate at Red Cedar Ventures and Michigan Rise.

We’ll cover the basics:

What is venture capital?

How do VC firms work?

Why should (or shouldn’t) I seek venture financing for my company?

Then dive into more advanced topics:

How are Angels and VCs different?

What do VCs care about, and why?

The investment process.

How should I work with investors?

The event will consist of a presentation followed by an open-mic Q&A session. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to pick the brain of a VC!

About Red Cedar Ventures and Michigan Rise

Red Cedar Ventures (RCV) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the MSU Foundation, a private, non-profit research foundation associated with Michigan State University (MSU), the premier land grant university in the nation. RCV’s objective is to help accelerate commercialization of startups emanating from MSU and ecosystem partners. Our vision is to be a leading midwestern venture fund providing economic impact with new technology companies, well-paying jobs and value-added partnerships.

Red Cedar Ventures staff manage three funds, which collectively invested in over 50 companies to date:

Red Cedar Ventures Pre-Seed Fund: assists MSU related companies and ecosystem partners with early-stage funding. Capital and support are provided to start-ups for company formation, minimal viable product, customer pilots and attainment of other milestones needed to position them for seed financing.

Michigan Rise Pre-Seed Fund III: administered by MSU Foundation on behalf of the state of Michigan and the MEDC. Michigan Rise (MR) is an early-stage fund which partners with other members of the Michigan statewide network focused on the earliest stages of commercialization, to identify and support high-potential technology startups across Michigan with capital, assisting portfolio companies with mentoring, grant funding and more.

Red Cedar Ventures Opportunity Fund: is a later-stage fund which provides new investment and follow-on funding and support to new and existing portfolio companies as they become de-risked and seek venture financing in order to scale.
