Churun Meru Venezuelan Folklore Dance Group

The Venezuelan Folklore Dance Group Churún Merú promotes Venezuelan culture in Canada. Churún Merú was founded in 1993 by a group of young Venezuelans, who were living in Ottawa when they came together and formed the folk dance group with the aim of keeping and promoting their cultural traditions in dancing, music and national customs.

The group "Churún Merú" was called after the aboriginal name of the table top mountain where is the Angel Fall (Salto Angel), the world's highest waterfalls (979 m, 3211 ft), and located in southern Venezuela.

Churún Merú entertains audiences with their delightful dances, powerful and impressive interpretations, colorful costumes and upbeat folkloric rhythms.

The Group has participated in numerous festivals and cultural events in the region, including performances at the very famous Carnival of Cultures, Dragon Boat, Canada Day celebrations, Multicultural Festivals in the University of Ottawa and Carleton, Greek Festival, School demonstrations’, among others. Moreover, the group has performed in other cities outside ottawa, such as Kingston, Brockville and Montreal.

Churún Merú is unique in Canada and is strongly rooted in Venezuelan folklore. However, as Canada, this dance group is multicultural, thus children, teen and adult dancers come from not only Venezuela, but also Cuba, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Canada.

Pedro Díaz, director of Churún Merú, has been incessantly looking after the continuous development of the Group since its foundation. He is a well-known member in the Latin-American Community in Canada's National Region Capital.

The Group consider especially important to interpret their rich musical heritage with high standard of choreographic work. Therefore, Tamara Quintana's rich background in modern, folk and Latin dances have been fundamental to the creative process of their traditional dances during their journey around the Venezuelan music.

Furthermore, Churún Meru's outstanding performance is largely due to the dedication of its dancers, who give countless hours to rehearsal, travel and presentations because of the deep love they feel for their culture, group and each other. To them it’s not just a Dance Group; it's a Family that can make the impossible… possible.

Together they strive to make sure that everyone dances from the heart; each presentation makes them feel one step closer to Venezuela.
