Description

Kotlin is now an officially supported language for Android development, and it's quickly growing in popularity!

So if you’re an Android developer thinking of transitioning to Kotlin, or just want to see if Kotlin is right for your team, this workshop is for you! Over two days, we will cover basic Kotlin syntax, conventions, good practices, and move on to build a working Android app. By the end of the workshop, you will walk away with a solid understanding of the benefits of Kotlin, and the ability to start thinking in Kotlin for Android development.



Schedule (Tentative)

DAY 1: Introduction to Kotlin

8:30am - 9:30am: Breakfast

9:30am - 10:30am: Intro/Lecture [Kotlin Basic Syntax]

10:30am - 10:45am: Break

10:45am - 12pm: Lab [Hands-on Kotlin]

12pm- 1:15pm: Lunch

1:15pm - 2pm: Lecture [Collections and Conventions]

2pm - 2:15pm: Break

2:15pm - 4pm: Lab [Hands-on Kotlin]

4pm - 4:30pm: Wrap-up and Q/A

DAY 2: Developing an Android app With Kotlin

8:30am - 9:30am: Breakfast

9:30am - 10:30am: Intro to Kotlin for Android

10:30am - 10:45am: Break

10:45am - 12pm: Lab [Hands-on Kotlin with Android - Start building Android app]

12pm- 1:15pm: Lunch

1:15pm - 2pm: Lecture [Kotlin Android Good Practices]

2pm - 2:15pm: Break

2:15pm - 4pm: Lab [Hands-on Kotlin with Android - Finish building Android app]

4pm - 4:30pm: Wrap-up and Q/A




Prerequisites For This Workshop

  1. Please go through The Getting Started tutorial on kotlinlang.org and run HelloWorld.kt prior to registration. This is to make sure you're set up with the development environment for this workshop. It should only take you about 5 minutes. http://kotlinlang.org/docs/tutorials/getting-started.html

  2. You will also need your normal Android Studio set up for Android development. If you have v3.0+ of Android Studio, you will be ready to use Kotlin. Otherwise, please refer to https://kotlinlang.org/docs/tutorials/kotlin-android.html to install the Kotlin plugin.

  3. You will need a basic understanding of Git.

  4. You should be comfortable building Android apps in Java.

  5. Please bring your laptop for development, as well as an Android test phone if you do not use an emulator.
