Event description

Description

Since its first performance of Vaughan Williams' choral work in 1954, the Canterbury Choral Society has explored many of his choral-orchestral works, performed in over 15 concerts. The four works we are presenting are an exciting synthesis of some of his greatest pieces, spanning 31 compositional years. Canterbury is thrilled to present three beautiful choral works with orchestra (Toward the Unknown Region, Dona Nobis Pacem, Sancta Civitas), and one piece that is purely orchestral (Piano Concerto in C).

Vaughan Williams's music is often characterized as a blending of the modal harmonies familiar from folk‐songs with the strong French influence of Ravel and Debussy. The combination of these four works will tell a harmonic and melodic story that will be simple at times, overwhelming at others, and utterly beautiful to hear performed live!
