About this Event

Vanguard Readings is a series of short readings by new writers and established authors, taking place every few months in London. But everyone deserves a holiday by the sea, so they are now a key part of Margate Bookie. Come along and hear tomorrow's authors today.

Renée Knight was a documentary-maker before turning to writing. She is a graduate of the Faber Academy ‘Writing a Novel’ course, where she began her first novel Disclaimer. Disclaimer went on to become a Sunday Times number one bestseller.Her second novel, The Secretary, was published this year.

Phoebe Locke is the pseudonym of full-time writer Nicci Cloke. She previously worked at the Faber Academy, and hosted London literary salon Speakeasy. She lives and writes in Cambridgeshire. Phoebe Locke is the author of two psychological thrillers, The Tall Man (2018) and The July Girls, which was published this summer.

Jeff Hilson has written four books of poetry: stretchers (Reality Street, 2006), Bird bird (Landfill, 2009), In The Assarts (Veer, 2010) and Latanoprost Variations (Boiler House Press, 2017). A fifth book, Organ Music, is due out soon from Crater Press. He also edited The Reality Street Book of Sonnets (Reality Street, 2008). He runs Xing the Line poetry reading series in London, and is a Reader in Creative Writing at the University of Roehampton.

Lesley Kara is an alumna of the Faber Academy ‘Writing a Novel’ course. Previously a lecturer and manager in Further Education, she now lives on the North Essex coast and writes full-time. Her debut novel The Rumour was a Sunday Times Top Ten hardback and paperback bestseller. Her second novel, Who Did You Tell?, is coming soon.

S J Watson’s first novel, Before I Go To Sleep, is a phenomenal international success. A bestseller around the world, it won The Crime Writers’ Association Award for Best Debut Novel and The Galaxy National Book Award for Crime Thriller of the Year. The film of the book, starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong, and directed by Rowan Joffe, was released in September 2014. SJ Watson was born in the Midlands and now lives in London.

Helen Young is an author and digital editor. Breakfast in Bogotá, her second novel, published in August of this year with Unbound. Set in 1940s Colombia, the novel is about a broken architect trying to build something new. She will be reading from the first few chapters.
