Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Vanguard (n.): 1. The leading edge of a military formation: the advanced guard. 2. The forefront of any movement, field, or activity.

After leaving a career as mechanical engineer in Boston to focus on art and sculpture, Tristan Shone, the creator and sole artist behind AUTHOR & PUNISHER, moved west to pursue his MFA in Southern California. In the metal and machine shops of University of California, San Diego, Shone forged a relationship with design, sound and fabrication that ultimately yielded AUTHOR & PUNISHER‘s first music and mapped the journey away from traditional instrumentation towards custom made, precision machinery. Shone used his technical knowledge, along with his artistic background to create what Wired Magazine has hailed as his own “special brand of doom metal.”

All aspects of the AUTHOR & PUNISHER sound begin with physical movement, limbs struggling in unison to coordinate a wall of electronic rhythm and oscillation, ultimately conditioned by an organic and loose quality absent of plastic perfection. AUTHOR & PUNISHER performances are a real amalgamation between man and mechanisms. They are direct, physical, heavy experiences that have amassed praise and intrigue from a wide array of audiences. Pitchfork styled him “immediate but mysterious,” Stereogum described his “chilling, unrecognizable form,” and NPR hails him as “a thrill [who] fires on all cylinders”.

INTERFERON is a techno project and visual art alias of Sean Conner based in Columbus, Ohio and founded in 2013. The project was started as a direct reaction and response against the traditional club scene and the high brow pretension present in a lot of the techno scene. INTERFERON is aggressive techno / broken beat with more of a punk ethic intended for filthy basements or gothic forest mosh pits. Sean has released vinyls on labels such as Mindcut Records and Apothecary Compositions, performed with Hemka, Swarm Intelligence and Container, remixed artists such as Myler and Keepsakes and crafted hundreds of release artwork designs for labels such as Green Fetish , Variance and OMEN Records.

RELIC (Cincinnati)

Relic as a band was formed in 2015 as a studio project by Jordan Davis in Cincinnati, OH. The addition of Dan Dickershied on drums brought visceral energy to the live performance and studio alike. Channeling influences from early 90's industrial rock, the duo manifests the sonic power of their self-described sound as industrial-cyberpunk.

Stalwarts on the Glitchmode Recordings label, Relic released their long-anticipated full length debut album in May 2017. They come to us fresh off a successful appearances at Sanctuary Festival in June and supporting 3Teeth in Columbus in July.

THE FALLEN (Columbus)

The dark knights of Columbus techno … Kevin Kennedy (FBK) and James Johnson (Plural) are each longtime denizens of the Midwest’s deep underground techno tradition. Joining forces as THE FALLEN, they make perfect comrades in arms. Plural’s low-end rumble and drum programming and FBK’s sample deconstrution and synth tweaking meld together to create a live sound that is totally unique: fluid and extremely danceable but dark, pulsing, and abrasive.

RCHTER (Columbus)

Bryce Baker began to turn his attention to the visionary music of the synthwave movement in 2016. Methodically building his repertoire, Bryce launched his RCHTER synthwave DJ project as the calendar turned on 2017. He has since twice performed at LeBoom, a monthly EDM party at Skullys, with his latest appearance in support of One More Time the Daft Punk Tribute act. Forged in the influence of OSTs and video game soundtracks, RCHTER sets are part nostalgia and part future, pushing the limits of electronic music along the way.
