This course highlights important factors that affect individual decision-making including personal values, ethics, power and control, emotion management, unmet needs, job stressors, and peer pressure. It introduces the concept of decision-making based on departmental core values, while exploring personal values and ethics. The course demonstrates decision-making through the use of sound judgment, courage, professional humility, trust honesty and responsibility. The course also demonstrates the positive and negative influences of group dynamics on individual decision-making. Specifically, group influences of inaction effect, conformity and obedience will be examined and applied to the custody environment. Techniques on how to maintain individual integrity and group decision-making are demonstrated through the use of interactive "courageous" communication strategies.
