A Vocal chorus of rhythm and harmony. Structure and spontaneity.

When you sing, musical vibrations move through you, altering your physical and emotional landscape. Group singing, for those who have done it, is the most exhilarating and transformative of all. It takes something incredibly intimate, a sound that begins inside you, shares it with a roomful of people and it comes back as something even more thrilling.

Voicestra singers will be given effective tools to hear and create rhythms, melodies, and harmonies within simple song structures. Working in circle, students first improvise melody, harmony, rhythm, counterpoint and interlocking parts in solo and small ensemble games. Then by learning to improvise as an ensemble, with exercises using the natural connection of body and voice, you learn to reveal authentic sound. Processes and methods will be taught to make vocal improvisation stage-worthy. Participants will be have opportunities to conduct the ensemble in improvised song and perform for an audience. All levels of expertise are welcome.

Allison is a classically trained musician and performer who has performed in theater and on national concert tours. Allison has sang, riffed and rejoiced with vocal improvisational masters (Bobby Mcferrin and Rhiannon) and discovered creative freedom and joy within musical improv and Voicestra conducting. She runs SF Voicestra, and is delighted to facilitate happiness and inspiration through group singing.
