Peter Newland, a student at Holyoke Community College, founded the rock band FAT in 1968. In an era when most bands were playing top 40 covers, FAT began writing original music. They were soon signed to RCA records and by 1970 had recorded & released their debut LP –FAT. With the success of their debut album they performed several times alongside the original Allman Brothers (with Duane Allman & Barry Oakley) at venues like Madison Square Garden in New York & have played with Grand Funk Railroad, Little Richard, Bonnie & Delaney, & Muddy Waters. The band formed an Indie label, Dream Merchant Records, & produced their second album, “Footloose. FAT constantly refined their music doing live shows, writing, recording & touring. After working with producers Mick Ronson (David Bowie, Bob Dylan) & Murray Krugman (Blue Oyster Cult) the band recorded their final album with producer Felix Pappalardi (Cream, Mountain). FAT was officially disbanded in 1985 but they re-formed in the mid-nineties to do a reunion concert & they’ve been playing several gigs a year ever since.
