Vagittarius
Vagittarius burst into being with a fiery bang in late 2014. Formed initially by friends Liz Greuel and Jillian Holzbauer, the then-duo cut their teeth on punk house shows and dive bar gigs. The two quickly garnered a reputation for their commanding vocal harmonies, sharp lyricism, and affinity for shitty moonshine. Still holding fast to their folk roots, Vagittarius began pushing forward into grungier territory, and a year after their formation, drummer Braden Franklin joined the mix to inject some driving rhythm into the equation. When bassist Gray Hightower entered the foray in January 2017, the fully formed four piece stepped back and said, “Well I do declare! Yall, I think we done got ourselves a rock and roll band!” In that time, Vagittarius has shared the stage with badasses from all over the rock and roots spectrum, including S.S. Web, Hudson Falcons, and The Goddamn Gallows; in March 2017 they also opened for Split Lip Rayfield at the historic Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa.
The band's sound pays homage both to the folk and classic country records they grew up listening to with their parents, and the belligerent, bawdy punk rock they devoured when the grown ups weren't looking. Their upcoming full-length album, Hide the Children, exists in that blurred space between Americana and gritty alternative. Songs like “Baptize” and “Gaslight” employ a country and bluegrass aesthetic to rip apart experiences of sexual violence and repression, first with revenge-fantasy conviction, then with bitingly sarcastic humor. Other tracks showcase the band's diversity, from the haunting and hard-hitting vibes of “Vultures” to the introspective waltz that is “Mind Over Matter.”
Hide the Children is slated for release in January 2018, with the band planning a tour of the South and Midwest in support of the album.
