Agenda

9:00 – 9:30 – Registration and coffee

9:30 – 10:00 – Welcome, Introductions and “Smalltalk Business Update” by Mike Taylor, Instantiations (via Internet)

Full abstract of talk: An update on the status of the VA Smalltalk business will be provided, as well as discussing 2009, strategies for 2010, and beyond.

10:00 – 10:30 – “State of Smalltalk / State of the Industry,” Georg Heeg, STIC

Full abstract of talk: The primary objective of STIC as a multi-vendor association is to promote the joint goals: "To create and increase awareness of Smalltalk" and "To promote Smalltalk as the superior technology for the construction of information systems." Georg will provide his view on why Smalltalk is the superior technology and how this can benefit the industry.

10:30 – 11:30 – “VA Smalltalk 8.0.2 Update,” John O’Keefe, Instantiations

Full abstract of talk: This session will introduce the newly-available VA Smalltalk V8.0.2 release, delve into the new capabilities available with it, and touch on additional capabilities we plan to deliver in the near-term follow-on releases.

11:30 – 11:45 Coffee Break

11:45 – 12:45 “Get Your Project Back in Shape! - How a Few Techniques Can Change Your (Project’s) Life,” Joachim Tuchel, objektfabrik

Full abstract of talk: Many Smalltalk projects have a history of 10-15+ years, and they suffer from the same problem: after the initial phases of the project have been completed, new techniques and tools are frequently not adopted. Although the reasons for lack of change can be well-intentioned, the irony is that many of these techniques - like automatic builds, unit tests, refactoring and more - come from Smalltalk projects that were developed by Smalltalkers. Joachim will show a few such techniques and tools that can increase your productivity in development, team collaboration, quality assurance and deployment.  By changing a few habits, you can significantly affect deliverables and make your life easier. Don't be shy, there's no rocket science involved!

12:45 – 1:45 – LUNCH

1:45 – 2:45  – “Seaside – How it’s Different and Why You Should Care,” Lukas Renggli, Seaside Core-Developer and co-author of Dynamic Web Development with Seaside book

Full abstract of talk: Seaside does many things differently from what is considered best practice in Web development. This talk will summarize new patterns of Web development and demonstrate why they are beneficial to build highly interactive Web applications quickly, reusably and maintainably. Moreover the presentation will cover the unique integration of Seaside with popular Javascript frameworks, such as jQuery and jQueryUI.

2:45 – 3:45 – “Smalltalk as a Service – Let Others Benefit from Your Mission-Critical Application,” Sebastian Heidbrink, Tricept Informationssysteme AG

Full abstract of talk: This session will show you how Tricept's fat client server conversion enables others to use your reliable, or even mission critical, business logic via web services. We will deliver insight into a sample server application architecture and how it might become integrated into your service oriented system environment. See how competitive this solution is and how you can benefit from staying with or expanding with VASmalltalk.

3:45 – 4:00 Coffee Break

4:00 – 4:30 – “ Invoking a VA Smalltalk-Hosted Web Service from ASP.NET,” Diane Engles, Instantiations

Full abstract of talk: This presentation demonstrates how to create and deploy a simple web service in VA Smalltalk, and how to invoke it from a Visual Studio Express Visual Basic web site running under IIS. After a short slide presentation, a live demo will follow that will take the user step by step through creating and deploying the web service, creating and deploying necessary proxy files into the ASP.NET environment, and invoking the web service from a simple Visual Basic ASP.NET web page.

4:30 – 5:30 – “Experience Report - Porting Packages from Pharo to VA Smalltalk,” John O’Keefe, Instantiations

Full abstract of talk: In the course of porting Seaside from Squeak (and now from Pharo) to VA Smalltalk, various code structures, tools, and techniques have been developed.  In this talk I will share my experiences both in doing the port and in helping develop the tools and code structures in Pharo that ease porting. Others have used some of this work to help with porting Seaside add-ons which are available in the VAStGoodies.com code repository. So it seems appropriate to also include some introductory remarks on VAStGoodies.com repository and its proper usage when posting projects (project annotations, notes and comments, developer information and so on).

5:30 – 6:00  – “Open Q & A and Closing Remarks,” Instantiations (including Eric Clayberg, remote); objektfabrik, Tricept

6:00 Networking reception
