Grief is a complex emotion that’s often not clearly understood. It is important for professionals to understand the dynamics of grief, its impact on the brain, and strategies to support those going through the various stages of grief. It may be difficult to move individuals through the criminal justice process when they are experiencing grief. Most people are uncomfortable with those who are grieving. You may not have formal education on how to process through grief to make it easier to interact with the bereaved. You may not understand how to support and communicate with them. Many people make the mistake of staying away because they don’t know what to say or are afraid that they’ll say the wrong thing. Or may attempt to rush individuals through the grief process. It is important to listen and care when people are grieving; and to understand the impact of grief on the brain. This training will provide you with tools to support and work with those going through the grief process. Strategies to help those who are grieving to understand the grief process is critically important in the healing process.
