Event Details

Please join UC Irvine School of Law for its third annual production of The Vagina Monologues! The show is completely student-run, and the majority of the proceeds will support the creation of a summer law clerk position for the law school's Domestic Violence Clinic.

About the Domestic Violence Clinic

Law students gain experience in multiple areas of the law and in multi-dimensional lawyering skills, while evaluating the benefits and limits of various interventions into the complex problem of domestic violence.

Students primarily represent domestic violence survivors who are seeking restraining orders in Orange County or petitioning to change their immigration status under the Violence Against Women Act.  Students also assist clients with housing, public benefits, and other legal and non-legal issues to help clients achieve freedom from violence.  Additionally, students engage in a community legal education or policy advocacy project.

About the Show

"The award-winning play is based on V-Day Founder/playwright Eve Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women's sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than twelve years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public." - http://www.vday.org/organize-event#.UtxGf_TTmQ8

About Women's Law Society (WLS)

The mission of the Women’s Law Society is two-fold: to promote the academic, personal and professional development of women law students, and encourage thoughtful discussion of issues related to gender, law and society.

WLS furthers these goals by hosting a speaker series, providing mentoring and academic and career development workshops, and connecting students with other organizations in the community focusing on women’s issues. WLS is open to all law students.

About V-Day

"V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery.
Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues, A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer, Any One Of Us: Words From Prison, screenings of V-Day's documentary Until The Violence Stops, and the PBS documentary What I Want My Words To Do To You, Spotlight Teach-Ins and V-Men workshops, to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. In 2012, over 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls." - V-day (http://www.vday.org/about#.Utw-TvTTmQ8)
